IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

Myself Bhavin, I am currently enrolled in masters in engineerning at XYZ. I have an evening course enrollment in this semester and i am writing to inform you that this course is clashes with one of my impertant subjects this term thats why i will not be able to continue this course this term.

I have some fixed goals about my carrier throughout my studies at XYZ which are getting hindered because of this clash. Can you please make an arrangement for me to continue this in next semsester and not loose credits for it.

Also i am writing this to ask your advise on what to do in this situation as my carrier advisor what can i do to save both course and pass the term with bright colors.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

Yours Faithfully,

Bhavin

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address the main requirements: you explain that a clash with an important subject prevents you continuing, request to take the course next semester without losing credits, and ask for advice. The purpose is clear and relevant throughout. The request about your preferred study arrangement is reasonably specific, but the explanation of your circumstances is brief, and the final question—“what can i do to save both course and pass the term”—is not fully clear about what advice or options you need. To strengthen the letter, explain the timetable conflict more precisely and ask whether deferral, credit transfer, or another arrangement is possible. This would develop the ideas more fully while retaining the clear purpose already present.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible overall order: it introduces the situation, explains the requested change, and then asks for advice before closing. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these functions, and the reader can follow the main message. However, some links between ideas are mechanical or unclear. For example, “thats why” joins the conflict and its consequence in a long sentence, while “Also i am writing this to ask” repeats the letter’s purpose rather than moving smoothly to the advice request. The final paragraph also combines several ideas without a clear progression. Use shorter, focused paragraphs and clearer transitions, and make references such as “this” explicit, to make the organisation more fluent.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough relevant vocabulary to communicate the situation, including “enrolled,” “continue,” “credits,” and “advisor.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the message less natural: “engineerning,” “impertant,” “carrier,” and “semsester” obscure otherwise straightforward ideas. Some phrases are also poorly collocated, such as “fixed goals” and “pass the term with bright colors.” The range is adequate for the basic purpose, but precision and control are limited. Check spelling carefully and choose conventional academic and administrative expressions, such as “career goals,” “defer the course,” and “successfully complete the term.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, and the main meaning is generally recoverable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in sentence construction and articles: “Myself Bhavin” is not a complete, natural introduction, and “I have an evening course enrollment in this semester” has an awkward grammatical pattern. The sentence beginning “this course is clashes” also has an incorrect verb form, while “as my carrier advisor what can i do” lacks clear sentence structure and punctuation. Capitalisation of “I” and sentence boundaries also need attention. Aim for controlled, complete sentences—for example, “I am enrolled in an evening course this semester, but it clashes with one of my required subjects.”
