IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I registered for an evening course for this semester. However, I won't be available to take up the course, as my schedule is quite tight this period. Nevertheless, I would like to take the course next semester because I believe it won't crash with my working schedule.
When I applied for the course, I was also invited for a job interview I applied for several months ago. Two days ago I was informed that I have been offered the job. However, my proposed work hours clashes with my school hours. I would have loved to combine both work and school together but due to the time clash, I can't run the two simultaneously.
I would like to continue the course next semester, I believe by then my shift will be adjusted. Taking up this job will also help me save up some money for the next semester in other to continue my studies.
kindly advice on what to do about this situation. If there's any paperwork or documentation I need to do to avoid being penalized for stepping down, kindly let me know.
I look forward to your response soon.
Yours faithfully ,
Oge Frances

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
You cover all three requested points clearly. You explain that the new job’s hours clash with your school hours, state that you want to resume the course next semester, and ask both what steps to take and whether paperwork is needed to avoid a penalty. The explanation is well developed through the sequence from the delayed job interview to the offer, and your intention to save money adds relevant context. The request for advice is especially practical and specific. To make the response even more complete, clarify whether you are asking to defer your current enrolment formally or withdraw and re-enrol next term; this would remove a small uncertainty about the action you want the recipient to take.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the enrolment problem, explain the job offer and timetable conflict, describe your plan for next semester, and finish with a request for guidance. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and links such as “However,” “Nevertheless,” and “Two days ago” help the reader follow the events. Some connections are less smooth: “I would like to continue the course next semester, I believe…” joins two complete thoughts with only a comma, and “Nevertheless” does not express a strong contrast with the preceding sentence. Use a full stop or a suitable conjunction, and choose linking words according to the precise relationship between ideas. These refinements would make the otherwise logical flow more consistently controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for a formal request and communicates the situation clearly, with useful phrases such as “proposed work hours,” “time clash,” and “avoid being penalized.” You also use relevant terms for the course and employment context. However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural: “take up the course” is less suitable here than “attend” or “continue,” while “my schedule is quite tight this period” and “my shift will be adjusted” could be expressed more naturally and specifically. “In other to” is also an incorrect phrase choice. Aim for accurate collocations and a consistently formal register, especially in the closing request; this will make your meaning sound more fluent and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including the reason clause “as my schedule is quite tight” and the conditional “If there’s any paperwork…”. Most sentences communicate their meaning without difficulty, and the sequence of past and future events is generally understandable. Some errors remain. In “my proposed work hours clashes,” the plural subject requires “clash”; “I would like to continue…, I believe…” is a comma splice; and “kindly advice” should be “kindly advise” because the sentence needs a verb. There is also a tense inconsistency in “I was also invited… I applied for several months ago.” Check agreement, sentence boundaries, and verb forms during revision. More consistent accuracy across these structures would strengthen the response.
