IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well and I am writing this letter to ask you that I am currently enroll myself in this new evening course for but I am unable to attend the classes this term.

First of all, I want to tell you that my work schedule is very hard nowadays and I have to go abroad for at least three months for my company project on software development. So, because of my unavailability I would like to enroll myself in next term.

Moreover, I would like to continue my study through online platforms because I do not want to stop my education due to my job commitments.

In addition to this, I want to ask you that what you suggest me about this situation should I continue this evening course via online lectures delivered from this academy or should I enroll myself in next term for physical classes.

I hope you will understand my situation and also give me a suggestion about this issue.

Yours sincerely,

Nosheen Rao

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points: you explain that your work schedule is demanding and that you must travel abroad for a three-month company project, state that you would prefer to continue studying online or take the course next term, and ask the academy for advice. The purpose is clear and the details about your circumstances make the request relevant. To make the response more fully developed, clarify your preferred option: you say you would like to enrol next term, but then ask whether you should take online lectures or attend in person next term. Explain which arrangement you favour and, if appropriate, ask about transferring your enrolment or accessing course materials. This would make your request more precise and consistently supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible sequence: it introduces the reason for writing, explains your work commitments, describes your study preference, and ends by requesting advice. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and linking phrases such as “First of all” and “Moreover” make the progression easy to follow. However, some connections feel mechanical, particularly the repeated “In addition to this” and “Moreover,” and the final question combines two alternatives in a way that makes your preferred plan less clear. Use fewer formulaic transitions and connect the options more directly—for example, explain that you hope to defer, then ask whether online study is possible in the meantime. This would make cohesion more flexible and precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes relevant expressions such as “work schedule,” “company project,” “job commitments,” and “online platforms.” These choices communicate the situation clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. There are, however, several awkward or imprecise phrases, including “ask you that,” “my unavailability,” and “give me a suggestion.” “Physical classes” is understandable but less natural in this context than “in-person classes.” Aim for more idiomatic collocations and avoid repeating “enroll myself”; a phrase such as “defer my enrolment until next term” would express your request more precisely. These improvements would add flexibility and naturalness to your vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the explanation beginning “because I have to go abroad” and the question contrasting online lectures with next-term classes. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “I am currently enroll myself” needs a correctly formed verb phrase, such as “I am currently enrolled,” while “I want to ask you that what you suggest me” has an incorrect question structure. The opening sentence also joins several ideas in a long, awkward construction. Practise forming indirect questions (“Could you advise me on…?”) and check verb forms and sentence boundaries. More accurate control of these patterns would strengthen the letter while preserving its range.
