IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing regarding my enrollement in an evening course because I would like to change my classes due to my busy schedule in daily routine these days. So, I would like to continue the course after this term.
I was thrilled when I joined the cooking classes because it is one of my hobby. Unfortunately, I cannot continue my classes due to my board exams next month. However, my parents want me to focus on my academic studies to achieve high grades.
I would like to continue my class after my exams. In addition, I can practice the new recipes in the kitchen when I get some leisure time from my studies because it will help me to revise the spices name.
I would appreciate it if you could help me to take the same course next term. If possible, please provide me the evening class because I will have me university classes in the morning.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Nitika

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The letter covers the main points: you explain that board exams and your parents’ expectations prevent you from continuing, say you hope to resume after the exams, and ask to take the course next term. The purpose is generally clear, but some parts are only partly developed. For example, “I would like to change my classes” is less precise than explaining directly that you need to defer your place, and the request for advice is not explicit: you ask the recipient to help arrange the course, but do not ask what options or steps are available. Clarify whether you want to transfer your enrolment, reserve a place, or reapply, and ask what procedure the school recommends. This would make the response more complete and focused on the recipient’s role.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, moving from the reason for writing to the circumstances, your future study plans, and a closing request. This gives it a coherent overall arrangement, and linking expressions such as “Unfortunately,” “However,” and “In addition” help signal relationships between ideas. Some connections are less smooth or precise, though. “So, I would like to continue the course after this term” repeats the opening idea before the reason has been explained, while “However” does not clearly contrast with the preceding sentence about enjoying the cooking classes. The sentence about practising recipes and revising spice names also interrupts the main request. Improve progression by presenting the reason first, then the proposed deferral and a direct question about the next steps.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the situation and make the letter’s purpose understandable, including relevant terms such as “board exams,” “cooking classes,” and “next term.” There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “revise the spices name,” although this phrase is not natural in this context. Several noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems limit precision: “enrollement” is misspelled, “busy schedule in daily routine” is awkward, and “provide me the evening class” is not idiomatic. Choose conventional expressions for formal correspondence, such as “defer my enrolment,” “due to my exam commitments,” and “offer me a place in an evening class.” More accurate collocations would make the message clearer and more professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and most of the meaning remains clear. You use subordinate clauses appropriately in “because I will have…” and “when I get some leisure time,” and the conditional request “I would appreciate it if…” is a useful structure for a formal letter. Some grammatical errors remain. In “it is one of my hobby,” the singular possessive construction needs a plural noun; “the spices name” also has an incorrect number relationship. “I will have me university classes” contains an incorrect pronoun, and “I joined the cooking classes because it is…” shifts between plural and singular reference. Check agreement, articles, and pronouns, and vary sentence patterns while keeping these relationships accurate.
