IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to request you to postpone me for the Computer cource in next semester because of my work schedule I am unable to attend evening session. I am Rohan, recently I enrolled for the evening classes, however, nowadaysI usually stay occupied in evening hours because of my work requirements.

Before this updated work schedule, I was performing morning duties only. But, since festivals are approaching soon, my schedule has been changed. To maintain my position at my job, I have to be on work from 12pm to 8pm. Thus, it become impossible for me to attend evening sessions.

I would appreciate it if you could allow me to join this cource in next semester. I am aware of that alterations in prescribed schedule is quite hechtic process as It requires re-assessment of each step and documentations. But, in this current time it is crucial for me to maintain a balance between study and job.

Could you please explain me the process of transferring from one cource to another. I have attached important documents along with this mail, if you need any further information please feel free to contanct me on my cell phone [redacted phone].

I will be gareful if you can make this change at your earliest convenience.

Yours Sincerely,

Rohan

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements: you explain that your work hours have changed, request to take the course next semester, and ask how to transfer. The reason is supported with specific details, including your former morning duties and the new 12 p.m.–8 p.m. schedule, so the reader can understand why attendance is difficult. Your purpose remains clear throughout, and the formal opening and closing suit the recipient. To make the response more fully developed, clarify whether you are asking to defer your current enrolment or transfer to a different course; “postpone me for the Computer course” and “transferring from one course to another” suggest different actions. You could also ask directly whether your place or fees can be carried forward.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear overall progression: it states the request, explains the change in work circumstances, asks about the transfer process, and closes politely. Paragraphing helps separate these functions, while connectors such as “however,” “Thus,” and “But” make relationships between ideas clear. The sequence from the previous schedule to the new one is especially easy to follow. Some links are less smooth: “Before this updated work schedule” is an awkward transition, and “But, in this current time” interrupts the formal flow. The final paragraph also combines the document note, request for further contact, and closing request in one long sentence. Use more natural transitions and separate these points to make cohesion more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of relevant expressions, including “work requirements,” “maintain my position,” and “maintain a balance between study and job,” which help convey the situation. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “cource,” “hechtic,” “contanct,” and “gareful” are misspelled, while “postpone me” and “alterations in prescribed schedule” are unnatural in this context. “Updated work schedule” is also less idiomatic than “new work schedule.” These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding your request, but they make the letter sound less fluent and professional. Check spelling carefully and learn common formal collocations for deferring enrolment and changing course dates.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including the conditional request “I would appreciate it if you could allow me…” and the subordinate clause beginning “since festivals are approaching soon.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but frequent errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms make the writing less controlled. For example, “I am writing to request you to postpone me” needs a different verb pattern, and “it become impossible” has incorrect tense and agreement. “I am aware of that” uses an incorrect clause pattern, while “Could you please explain me the process” is missing the appropriate preposition. Review verb forms, agreement, and patterns such as “request that…” and “explain something to me”; also break up the long final sentence with clearer punctuation.
