IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
As a student at Laurentian University, I am writing to formally request your assistance regarding dropping the course I enrolled for. My enrollment number is [redacted phone].
To provide some specific context, I enrolled for Data Mining subject this winter. However, I realised that the course is scheduled in the evening and it crashes with the other subject.
Regarding my studies, I am planning to complete this subject in the upcoming semester. Ideally, I hope to transfer the tuition fees I have already paid toward the next semester so that I can resume the course once my schedule clears up.
I would be incredibly grateful if you could provide me any suggestions to counter the situation. Also, can you possibly make any changes from your side by dropping the course I enrolled for?
I hope you will consider my request favourably, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Anshu Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points: you explain that the evening Data Mining class clashes with another subject, state that you want to take it next semester, and ask both for advice and for the course to be dropped. The purpose is clear and the formal request is maintained throughout. To make the response more fully developed, explain the scheduling conflict in a little more detail and clarify whether you are asking to defer, withdraw, or transfer your fees, since these may involve different procedures. The request for advice is also quite general; specifying what information you need, such as the withdrawal deadline or fee-transfer policy, would make the letter more precise and better supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: opening request, explanation of the problem, proposed study plan, and closing request. Paragraphing supports this progression, and phrases such as “However,” “Regarding my studies,” and “Also” help connect the points. The reader can follow the purpose without difficulty. Some transitions are slightly formulaic, particularly “To provide some specific context” and “Regarding my studies,” and the final paragraph combines a request for advice with a request for administrative action. A more direct transition and a clearer separation of those two requests would make the cohesion feel more flexible and less dependent on signposting.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You use a suitable range of formal and academic vocabulary, including “formally request your assistance,” “upcoming semester,” and “consider my request favourably.” These choices establish an appropriate tone and communicate the main points clearly. There are occasional collocation or word-choice issues: “dropping the course I enrolled for” is less natural than “withdrawing from the course,” while “counter the situation” does not express the intended meaning idiomatically. “Crashes with” is understandable but informal for this letter. More precise administrative vocabulary would help you express the distinction between withdrawing now and deferring the course or transferring fees, while retaining the generally appropriate register.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You show a useful mix of sentence forms, including the complex sentence beginning “However, I realised that…” and the conditional structure “if you could provide me…”. Most sentences are clear, and punctuation and sentence boundaries are generally controlled. A few grammatical patterns need attention: “enrolled for Data Mining subject” needs an article or a different construction, and “provide me any suggestions” requires “with” or “provide me with.” In “the course is scheduled in the evening and it crashes…,” the pronoun “it” has an unclear reference, and the coordination would be clearer if the two subjects were stated explicitly. These are limited issues, but polishing them would strengthen the otherwise sound control.
