Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Miss. Sara,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter due to my request to shift my current course to the next term.
I would like to mention that i am working as an educator in the morning. My working hours starts early at Seven in the morning until five in afternoon. I have also daily duties toward my children after school that make me busy till evening. I have tried to organize my schedule to take the course in parallel but i could not handle it specially during sports nights.
I was thinking if we can pause my current course then retake it next term, that matter would be more comfortable to me. I have a plan to obtain family support in driving my children to their sports. I also applied for Three weeks leave request in my job.
Your advice to me would be a precious step to handle my situation. If you see that this shifting action will affect my education path, kindly let me know.
Your support is highly appreciated.
Yours faithfully,
Nada Abas

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you explain your work and childcare commitments, propose pausing and resuming the course next term, and ask for the recipient’s advice. The details about your working hours and your children’s sports make the reason for your request understandable, while “If you see that this shifting action will affect my education path” directly invites guidance. The purpose remains clear throughout. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain briefly why the proposed family support and three weeks of leave would make next term more manageable, and state whether you are asking the course provider to defer your enrolment or simply advise you on the options. This would make the request more precise and better supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear, logical progression: it opens with the request, explains your circumstances, presents a possible plan, and closes by asking for advice. Paragraphing supports these shifts, and linking phrases such as “I have also” and “I was thinking” help the reader follow the sequence. The tone is consistently polite and appropriate for a formal request. Some connections could be more explicit: the relationship between your current schedule, the proposed leave, and taking the course next term is not fully explained. Also, “that matter” refers somewhat vaguely to pausing and retaking the course. Use a more direct reference, such as “This arrangement,” and add a transition that clarifies how your proposed support would resolve the scheduling problem.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the situation, including “organize my schedule,” “pause my current course,” and “education path,” and your meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at formal phrasing, such as “Your support is highly appreciated.” However, some word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise: “shift my current course” and “retake it next term” do not clearly express deferring enrolment, while “sports nights” is unclear in context. “Working hours starts” also includes a word-form error that affects lexical accuracy. Aim for conventional course-administration language and more natural collocations, such as “defer my enrolment” and “take my children to their sports activities.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the conditional “If you see that this shifting action will affect my education path” and the clause “that make me busy till evening.” The message remains understandable, and several sentences are controlled. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “My working hours starts,” the plural subject requires “start”; “in afternoon” needs an article; and “i” should be capitalised. The sentence beginning “I was thinking if we can pause…” would be more accurate as “I was wondering whether we could pause…”. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, capitalisation, and conditional phrasing, while continuing to use complex sentences with careful checking.
