IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir,

I am writing to you to inform you about the changes in my work place, which might hinder me from progressing with my course. We started a new project in my place of work which will hold for 6months.

After accessing it, i realised it will be difficult for me to commune between my studies and work. So, i am thinking of putting an hold to the evening class till next term.

Also, i don't know if it will be possible for me to take the course online. This will really be of great help to me because i need the course certificate for promotion in my workplace.

I do not have enough understanding on how to go about the whole situation. That is why i am informing you to seek your guidiance on the neccessary steps i need to take, so i can continue with the course alongside my work.

I would be grateful if you can put me through.

Yours Faithfully,

Deborah

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you explain that a new work project will make it difficult to continue, say you hope to pause until next term, and ask for guidance. The reason for writing is clear throughout, and the detail that you need the certificate for promotion helps explain why continuing your studies matters. You also raise online study as a possible alternative, which is relevant. To make the request more fully developed, specify whether your preferred option is deferring the course or switching to online study, and ask directly about the procedure or any deadlines. This would make your intended outcome and the advice you need more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible sequence: the work change is introduced first, followed by its effect on your studies, possible options, and a request for guidance. Paragraphing helps separate these points, and phrases such as “So” and “That is why” make the relationships between ideas understandable. The overall progression is clear, though some links feel mechanical, and the final paragraph repeats the request for help rather than adding a distinct next step. The reference in “After accessing it” is also not immediately clear. Use more precise links and refer directly to the project—for example, explain that its six-month duration means you cannot attend evening classes—and end with a specific question about deferral or online study.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary communicates the main situation, and phrases such as “new project,” “course certificate,” and “promotion” are relevant to the purpose of the letter. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “commune between my studies and work” does not express balancing the two, while “put an hold” and “put me through” are not suitable in this context. There are also spelling and form errors, including “guidi ance” and “neccessary.” Aim for accurate, natural phrases rather than more elaborate wording: for example, say that you are struggling to balance work and study, and ask the recipient to advise you on the next steps.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “changes in my work place, which might hinder me” and the reason clause beginning “because I need the course certificate.” Meaning remains clear despite some grammatical and punctuation errors. For example, “i realised it will be difficult” needs a capital letter and more consistent tense, and “an hold” should be “a hold.” The opening sentence also needs a space after the comma, and “if you can put me through” would be more grammatically natural as a polite request using “could.” Review articles, capitalisation, and punctuation, while continuing to use subordinate clauses to explain the situation.
