Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear sir,

I am writting this letter to inform about my welding course which is in the evening, I am not continue this course in the middle of term since i have hectic schedule.

In my course, I worked at welding shop and nowdays the work is on the peak. In workshop I have no time to take a break in the middle of the day and even i have no time to eat a lunch as well as to attend my course.

In study days I learn more or more about welding and this is helpful for me in workplace. The ways of teaching is very beneficial for me and topics are clearly I understand . The staff members is very polite behaviour and supportive.

Give me some advice when I welding a steel, the steel was burn because I have no idea about current of welding machine.

I hope you will see this letter and response positively.

Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You explain that your busy work schedule prevents you from attending the evening welding course, and you show that you value the teaching and support. However, the main request in the task is not fully addressed: you do not clearly say that you want to defer your studies until next term. The request for advice is also unclear, because “Give me some advice when I welding a steel” asks about a welding problem rather than what to do about your course situation. To improve, state directly that you hope to pause or transfer your enrolment to next term, then ask the recipient what options or steps are available. These gaps leave the letter only minimally responsive to the full purpose of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The letter has a recognisable sequence: you introduce your difficulty, explain your workload, describe the course positively, and close politely. Paragraph breaks also help separate these points. However, the progression is not consistently clear because the course praise and the question about welding steel interrupt the central message about postponing your studies. Connections between ideas are limited, and some sentences are difficult to follow, such as “In study days I learn more or more about welding.” Organise the letter around the three requested points: explain the work conflict, state your plan to continue next term, and ask for advice about changing your enrolment. Clearer links between paragraphs would make the message easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “hectic schedule,” “welding course,” “workshop,” and “supportive.” These choices show an attempt to use language beyond very basic terms. However, several spelling and word-choice problems reduce precision, such as “nowdays,” “on the peak,” and “more or more.” Some phrases are also unnatural or unclear, including “the topics are clearly I understand” and “polite behaviour.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling; for example, describe work as “particularly busy” rather than “on the peak,” and say that you “understand the topics clearly.” More precise vocabulary for course administration, such as “defer my enrolment,” would also help express your purpose.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, for example, “In my course, I worked at welding shop and nowdays the work is on the peak.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to understand. Examples include “I am not continue this course,” “I have no time to take a break … and even i have no time,” and “The staff members is.” These show problems with verb forms, sentence construction, agreement, and capitalisation. Try using controlled structures such as “I cannot continue because my workload has increased” and “The staff members are supportive.” Proofread each sentence for a clear subject and correctly formed verb, and use full stops to avoid joining too many ideas.
