IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Mam,

I am writing to discuss my situation and to ask for advice regarding my evening course that I recently enrolled in.

Last week I enrolled in an evening course, unfortunately, I won't be able to attend regularly. Because Yesterday I got promoted to a new position, and I have more responsibilities and duties. My demanding role and busy schedule make my days more packed. And I also want to complete my course, as it will strengthen my analytical skills, critical thinking and overall development.

Regarding my studies, I would request that you offer me access to online or recorded classes to make up for my missed classes. Also, if you could share the study material, such as books, websites, PDFs, and educational videos, on my Gmail, that would be really helpful for me.

Moreover, I was worried about my exams; if I couldn't come, what would the consequences be? Can you please suggest an alternative regarding this situation? I hope you will understand my situation.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Mamta

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You explain the reason for your difficulty—your promotion has brought greater responsibilities—and make clear that you still want to complete the course. You also ask about missed classes and exam consequences, so the main situation is relevant. However, the response only partially fulfils the task: rather than saying you would like to defer your studies until next term, you mainly request online or recorded lessons and materials. The request for advice is present but broad, and the letter does not clearly ask the course provider to transfer your enrolment. State directly that you cannot continue this term and would like to take the course next term, then ask what arrangements or fees apply.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the purpose, explains the work change, makes requests about study materials, and closes with a question and polite sign-off. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and links such as “Regarding my studies” and “Moreover” signal shifts in focus. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in linking ideas. At times, however, the connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Because Yesterday…” is not smoothly attached to the preceding sentence, and “And I also want…” begins a sentence with a link that does not clearly show the relationship between the ideas. Use complete, connected sentences and organise the requests around the central proposal to defer the course.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range for a formal request, including “enrolled,” “responsibilities,” “demanding role,” “analytical skills,” and “alternative.” These choices communicate the situation clearly, and the vocabulary is varied enough to avoid excessive repetition. There are also some less natural or imprecise expressions that keep the wording from being consistently flexible: “make my days more packed” is informal, “on my Gmail” is not the natural way to describe an email address, and “regarding this situation” is vague. “Offer me access to online or recorded classes” also focuses on catching up rather than the requested next-term enrolment. Prefer precise, conventional phrases such as “my workload has increased,” “send the materials to my email address,” and “defer my enrolment until next term.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “if you could share the study material … that would be really helpful for me” and the question about exam consequences. Most meaning remains clear, and the errors do not generally prevent understanding. Some sentence-boundary and punctuation problems are noticeable, however. “Last week I enrolled in an evening course, unfortunately, I won't be able to attend regularly” joins two independent clauses with commas; “Because Yesterday I got promoted…” is an incomplete sentence, and “And I also want…” is an awkward sentence opening. Capitalisation is also inconsistent in “Yesterday.” Improve control by joining the reason to the main clause—for example, “Since I was promoted yesterday, my responsibilities have increased”—and check that each sentence has a complete main clause.
