IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/Madam
I hope you are doing well.I have decided to postpone my course for the next two terms. As something urgent came up and I have to leave the country for sometime to go visit my sister due to her health issues that need my immidiate presence.
However, I have already paid my fees for both courses. I would like to continue it in next summer. I want you to defer my payment for the next semester so, that I do not have to go through the application process again. Once, I am back from overseas, I would like to continue my studies then.
I would appreciate it, if you lend me some advice, what can be in this situation. As far as i know i am stuck between two boats here. Moreover, you know how hard I have worked to get enrolled in these particular courses.
I am looking forward for your advice.
Yours faithfully,
Adrian Conti

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you explain that your sister’s health has created an urgent need to travel, state that you want to resume your studies next summer, and ask the institution for advice. The request to defer payment and avoid repeating the application process also gives the letter a clear practical purpose. This meets the task well, with some elements developed more fully than others. In particular, the reason for leaving is clear, but the study plan is not fully consistent: you mention postponing the course for “the next two terms” and later continuing “in next summer.” Clarify the exact term you wish to join and what should happen to the fees already paid to make the request more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a recognisable formal structure, moving from the situation to the payment and study request, then to a request for advice and a closing. Paragraphing helps separate these functions. However, some links are mechanical or unclear. “However” does not clearly contrast with the urgent travel in the preceding paragraph, and “Moreover” introduces a point about your effort without showing how it relates to the advice requested. The sequence of “next two terms,” “next summer,” and “next semester” also makes the progression of your plan difficult to follow. Use clearer transitions and keep the timeline consistent; for example, explain the travel first, then state the precise term you hope to resume and ask what arrangements are possible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a formal request, including “postpone,” “defer my payment,” “application process,” and “enrolled.” These choices communicate the main situation and show an attempt to use more specific language. Some expressions are inaccurate or not well suited to this context, however. “Stuck between two boats” is not the usual idiom; “caught between two options” would be clearer. “Lend me some advice” is also an unnatural collocation, and “continue it” is vague when referring to studies or a course. There are spelling errors in “immidiate” and “sometime,” which should be corrected. More precise, conventional phrasing would make the letter sound more natural and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, such as the opening explanation beginning “As something urgent came up” and the conditional “so that I do not have to go through the application process again.” The meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. The opening has a sentence fragment after the first full stop: “As something urgent came up…” should be joined to the preceding sentence or rewritten as a complete sentence. There are also errors in “I would appreciate it, if” (no comma is needed) and “what can be in this situation,” which needs a clearer grammatical structure, such as “what I can do in this situation.” Check sentence boundaries, punctuation, and clause construction to improve accuracy while retaining your complex sentences.
