IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to inform that you I am recently enrolled in the course in your institute which I cannot continued owing to my hectic work schedule.

The main reason for this decision is that I have recently started working longer hours at my workplace. Therefore, I am extremely tired in the evening and It is challeging for me to manage study and work together. If I continue classes in this condition, I cannot achieved my desired score in the course.

However, I am still inetrested in course and I can impeove my communication skills, creativity, professional skills and so on. As a result, I prefer to postponed my study until next term, when I hope to have a more suitable schedule and enough time for my study.

Could you please advise me on the available options? I would like to know whether I can transfer my enrolment to next term and if there are any additional fees or formalities involved.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Kirandeep kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three points clearly: you explain that longer working hours leave you tired, state that you want to postpone your studies until next term, and ask about transferring your enrolment, fees, and formalities. The reason for stopping is relevant and supported by the concern that continuing could affect your result. Your intention to improve communication and professional skills also helps explain why you remain interested in the course. To make the request even more fully developed, specify when next term begins or whether you are asking to defer rather than withdraw, and briefly explain what arrangement would help you continue successfully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter has a clear progression from explaining your circumstances, to stating your preferred plan, and then asking for advice. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Therefore,” “However,” and “As a result” make the relationships between ideas easy to follow. The closing is also appropriate for a formal enquiry. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, particularly “As a result,” which does not quite express the relationship between your interest in the course and your preference to postpone. You could improve the flow by linking the ideas more directly—for example, explain that because you remain committed to the course, you would like to defer your place.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose, and phrases such as “hectic work schedule,” “available options,” and “additional fees or formalities” communicate the situation and enquiry effectively. You also attempt a range of relevant expressions, including “desired score” and “professional skills.” However, some spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “inetrested,” “impeove,” and “challeging” should be corrected, while “manage study and work together” is not a natural collocation. “Communication skills, creativity, professional skills and so on” is also broad and repetitive. Aim for accurate, natural phrases such as “balance work and study” and choose specific skills that relate to the course.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the reason clause “when I hope to have a more suitable schedule” and the conditional sentence beginning “If I continue classes.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. In the opening, “I am writing to inform that you I am recently enrolled” contains an incomplete construction and an unnecessary “you”; a clearer form is “I am writing to inform you that I recently enrolled.” There are also incorrect verb forms in “cannot continued,” “cannot achieved,” and “prefer to postponed.” Check that modal verbs take the base form and that “to” is followed by the base form of a verb. These corrections would make your varied sentence forms more controlled.
