IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing with regard to changing my decision about an evening course that I have enrolled in for the summer semester this year. This is happening due to my busiest schedule in the next few months, as I have been hired at Amazon for a seasonal agreement that I applied for a year ago, and there will be a marriage function for my younger sister's wedding in October. Due to these circumstances, I might not be able to concentrate on my studies.
If possible, I would like to request that you transfer my admission to this course for the next session. This could be easiest for me to engage myself properly in this course, as I will be totally free from my current responsibilities.
Moreover, I would like your suggestion for my present situation that would work well for me. As I have access to complete this course while attending part-time, as you mentioned in your terms and conditions so my concern is that should I go for part-time or wait for another few months or complete it full-time. I would really appreciate it if you could enlighten me with your recommendations.
Yours sincerely,
Bhagwant Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You address all three points clearly: you explain that a seasonal job and your sister’s wedding will make it difficult to continue, request a transfer to the next session, and ask whether part-time study or postponement would be advisable. The purpose is clear and the tone is appropriately polite. The reasons are relevant and specific, especially the job you applied for earlier and the October wedding. To make the request more fully developed, state directly whether you are asking the institution to defer your enrolment, and clarify whether you would accept part-time study if deferral is not possible. This would make the proposed action and the advice sought more precise while retaining the clear focus of the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression from explaining your circumstances, to requesting a transfer, to asking for advice. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Due to these circumstances” and “Moreover” help connect the ideas. The reader can follow your purpose throughout. Some connections are less smooth within sentences, particularly the final paragraph, where the question about part-time study, waiting, or studying full-time is crowded into one long sentence. The transition from requesting a transfer to asking for advice could also be more explicit. Separate the alternatives into a clearer question and use references such as “this option” only when their meaning is unmistakable; this would make the cohesion more flexible and natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of formal vocabulary for a request, including “with regard to,” “circumstances,” “responsibilities,” and “recommendations.” These choices communicate the situation and maintain a respectful tone. There are also some imprecise or unnatural collocations that limit the precision of the vocabulary: “changing my decision” is not the usual way to describe deferring enrolment, and “seasonal agreement” is less natural than a term for temporary employment. “Marriage function” and “engage myself properly” also sound awkward in this context. Aim for more idiomatic combinations and precise institutional language, such as “defer my enrolment” and “focus fully on the course.” This would strengthen the range you already demonstrate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a complex explanation beginning “as I have been hired” and a conditional request with “If possible.” Most of the message remains understandable, and the main ideas are conveyed. However, some sentence structures and punctuation need more control. In the final paragraph, “As I have access to complete this course while attending part-time, as you mentioned…” is an incomplete and confusing construction; it also runs into a question without clear punctuation. The phrase “my concern is that should I go” needs a clearer indirect-question structure, such as “I am unsure whether I should…”. Review clause boundaries and question forms, and divide long sentences where necessary to improve accuracy and readability.
