IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Josh,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I cannot continue my Medical Coding training because I of work related stress. I will definitely enroll in this course in the coming term instead of this semester.

I believe that due to excess workload from my manager I cannot find time to attend the classes. My manager is not granting me Permission to leave an hour before my shift time ends. As my work schedule time and course classes are on the same time I cannot be available.

However, until then I will try my best to learn basics of coding through some educational websites and videos available on the Internet so that I should not forget the basic knowledge required for this course. I will also enhance my typing skills and Medical vocabulary in the mean time.

Honestly, I am little bit cofused about the situation and it will be really very helpful if you can advice me on this matter.

Waiting for your reply.

Yours truly,

Nabila.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three points: you explain that work pressure prevents attendance, state that you intend to take the course next term, and ask the recipient for advice. The reason is made specific through the manager’s refusal to let you leave early and the overlap between work and class times. Your plan to study coding basics and improve typing and medical vocabulary also adds relevant detail. This gives the letter a clear purpose and covers the task well. To make the response more complete, develop the request for advice: for example, ask whether your enrolment can be deferred, whether fees can be transferred, or whether any alternative arrangement is available. The study plan is useful but could be linked more directly to continuing the course next term.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information follows a sensible sequence: you explain the problem, describe what you will do in the meantime, and then request advice. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “However” and “until then” make the relationship between ideas clear. The letter is coherent overall, though some connections are a little mechanical or unclear. For instance, “However, until then” combines two transitions where one would be enough, and “As my work schedule time and course classes are on the same time” is difficult to follow. Use a more direct link, such as “Because my work hours overlap with the classes, I cannot attend.” A clearer closing request would also give the final paragraph a stronger sense of progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the situation, including relevant terms such as “workload,” “attend the classes,” “educational websites,” and “typing skills.” These choices make the circumstances and your plans understandable. There are also some attempts at more specific language, such as “Medical Coding training” and “Medical vocabulary,” although capitalisation is unnecessary for these general terms. A few word-choice, spelling, and collocation issues reduce precision: “work related stress” is less exact than “work-related pressure,” “excess workload” is awkward, and “cofused” is misspelled. “Advice” is also the noun; the verb form is “advise.” Aim for natural combinations and check spelling and word forms carefully, especially in the final request.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms. For example, “I believe that due to excess workload from my manager I cannot find time to attend the classes” attempts to explain cause, while “so that I should not forget” expresses purpose. The meaning remains clear overall, but some grammatical errors are present. In “I cannot continue my Medical Coding training because I of work related stress,” the extra “I” disrupts the clause; write “because of work-related stress.” The sentence beginning “As my work schedule time…” also has an unclear structure, and “I am little bit confused” needs an article: “I am a little bit confused.” Review clause construction, articles, and punctuation around introductory phrases to make your sentences more consistently accurate.
