explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to inform you about my enrollment in an evening course. I will not be able to continue my studies. I have to withdraw my enrollment.
Unfortunately, I have some financial concerns. Due to personal circumstances, I had to use savings for my siblings who started college this year. Being an elder brother, I am repsonsible to take care my siblings. I had to pay his college fees for the year.
I have planned that I would continue my studies next year as I am still egilibile for this. As per college policy, my enrollment will be valid for 2 years. Moreover, I helped him to get job in my company so he will be able to manage his expenses by this time.
Although, I am trying to best to manage everything but could you please advice me if anything can be helpful for me to continue my studies.
I am looking forward for your reply.
Regards,
Manny

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address the main points: you explain that financial pressures linked to supporting your siblings prevent you from continuing, state that you hope to resume next year, and ask the college for advice. The explanation is relevant and gives useful context, including the two-year validity of your enrolment and your sibling’s expected employment. However, the request is somewhat indirect: “if anything can be helpful” does not specify whether you are asking about deferral, a fee arrangement, or another option. The plan to continue next year is clear, but the letter would be more complete if you explicitly asked to transfer your place to the next term and confirmed what action the college needs from you.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a sensible overall sequence: you introduce the problem, explain the financial circumstances, describe your intended return, and ask for guidance. Paragraphing helps distinguish the explanation from your request, and links such as “Unfortunately,” “Moreover,” and “Although” show an effort to connect ideas. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. “Although, I am trying to best to manage everything” does not connect clearly to the request that follows, and “by this time” has an unclear reference. The opening also repeats the inability to continue and the need to withdraw before explaining why. A more direct progression, with each paragraph serving one clear purpose and clearer references, would make the cohesion more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for a formal request, including “financial concerns,” “personal circumstances,” “enrollment,” and “college policy,” so the reader can understand the situation. There is also some attempt to express specific circumstances rather than relying only on general terms. However, several noticeable spelling and word-choice or collocation errors reduce precision: “repsonsible,” “egilibile,” “take care my siblings,” and “looking forward for your reply.” “Withdraw my enrollment” may also suggest cancelling rather than postponing your studies. Choose conventional expressions such as “responsible for supporting,” “eligible to resume,” and “look forward to hearing from you.” More accurate collocations and careful proofreading would make the vocabulary more natural and appropriate to a formal letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of short statements and longer sentences, including a reason clause beginning “as” and a concessive structure beginning “Although.” Most of the message remains understandable, and the basic sentence patterns communicate the key circumstances. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in clause construction and sentence boundaries. For example, “Although, I am trying to best to manage everything but…” combines two contrasting structures; use either “Although I am trying my best…, could you…” or “I am trying…, but could you…?” In “I had to pay his college fees,” the pronoun reference is unclear, and “I would continue my studies next year as I am still…” shifts awkwardly between a future plan and present eligibility. More controlled complex sentences and clearer references would improve accuracy.
