IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to make a apology for being unable to attend the evening course of Supply Chain Management in which I recently enrolled.

I had enrolled in a part time course named Supply Chain Management to learn business related skills. However, due to an urgent work at home,I will be unable to attend this course especially during evenings.

I believe this course would be greatly helpful for me ,as I am working in a field of business. To gain valauble skills and develop some business related knowldge ,I consider this course to be essential for enhancing my skills.

I would be grateful if you could advise me how can I reschedule this course nect term.your assitance on this matter would be highly apppreciated.I also would like to know whether I need to sign any form or pay any additional cost to take part in next term.

Thank you for your time and consideration.I look forward to your respose.

Yours faithfully,

Sukhdeep.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points in the prompt: you explain that urgent responsibilities at home prevent evening attendance, state that you want to take the course next term, and ask what steps are required, including whether a form or extra payment is needed. The purpose and polite tone are clear throughout. You also explain why the course matters to your business work, which supports your request. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the nature or likely duration of the home commitment and state directly that you wish to defer your enrolment rather than simply asking how to reschedule. The request for advice is relevant, though it could be more specific about available options if deferral is not possible.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible sequence: opening purpose, explanation of the difficulty, reasons for valuing the course, and a request for guidance. The paragraphs help distinguish these functions, and the formal opening and closing suit the audience. This gives the reader a clear overall progression. However, some links between ideas are mechanical or unclear: the second paragraph repeats that you enrolled, while the next begins “I believe this course,” without a particularly smooth connection to the request to postpone. Punctuation and spacing also interrupt the flow, for example “skills. However” and “consideration.I”. Use clearer transitions and ensure each paragraph advances the request rather than repeating information.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary appropriate to a formal course-related letter, including “enrolled,” “reschedule,” “essential,” and “additional cost.” The wording generally communicates your purpose, but the range and control are limited by several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as “valauble,” “knowldge,” “assitance,” and “respose.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise: “a urgent work at home” and “business related skills” do not express the situation smoothly. Aim for accurate collocations and proofread spelling carefully, as these errors reduce the professional impression even when the intended meaning remains understandable. More precise language for postponing enrolment would also strengthen the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the relative clause in “the evening course … in which I recently enrolled” and the conditional request “I would be grateful if you could advise me.” These structures help maintain a formal tone, and the main message remains clear despite some errors. There are, however, several grammatical and punctuation problems. For example, “make a apology” needs the correct article, and “advise me how can I reschedule” requires indirect-question word order: “advise me how I can reschedule.” The sentence beginning “due to an urgent work at home” also has an article/countability problem. Improve accuracy in articles and embedded questions, and separate sentences consistently with spaces and appropriate punctuation.
