IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I would not be able to contine SOC 530 course in this upcoming semester that I have registered in last week. Yesterday I got my class schedule and I found all my classes on Friday and Sunday evenings that would be really inconventient to continue as It conflicting my other classes schedule. I am taking RM 560 Research Methodology in this continuing semester which is really important for me that I can not drop off. As in my final semester, I will be working on research project and it only offers once in a year. Due to the time conflict reasons, I would not be able to continue your course SOC 530 in this semester. But I am hoping to take this course in next semester as I know this course offers valuable insights.

I hope you will consider my issue and let me enroll the course SOC 530 for next semester. I am looking forward to your valuable advice.

Kind regards

Smith.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You explain the main reason for withdrawing: the Friday and Sunday evening classes conflict with your Research Methodology course, which is important because of your final-semester research project. You also state a clear preference to take SOC 530 next term, so the central purpose is easy to understand. However, the request to enrol next term is not fully developed, and the final request for “valuable advice” is vague: specify what advice you need, such as whether you should defer, transfer your registration, or complete a formal withdrawal process. The explanation is relevant, but some details are unclear, including the relationship between the course schedule and your other classes. Developing the practical request more fully would make the letter more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a generally logical order: you explain the scheduling problem, give context about your other course, state that you hope to study SOC 530 next term, and close with a request. The opening and closing also suit a formal letter. However, most of the information is placed in one long paragraph, so the explanation and the request are not clearly separated. Some links feel mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “course” and “semester,” and “But” at the start of the second sentence in the final paragraph creates a slightly abrupt transition. Use separate paragraphs for the circumstances and the action you want, and connect the ideas more smoothly to strengthen progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for explaining an academic scheduling problem, including “class schedule,” “time conflict,” “research project,” and “valuable insights.” These choices make the situation understandable and show some attempt at more specific language. However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision: “inconventient” is misspelled, “conflicting my other classes schedule” is not a natural phrase, and “drop off” does not mean withdraw from a course in this context. “Continuing semester” is also unclear. Aim for accurate academic collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, refer to a timetable clash and say that you cannot continue or need to withdraw from the course.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a longer explanation beginning “Yesterday I got my class schedule” and a reason clause about your research project. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. In “I found all my classes on Friday and Sunday evenings that would be really inconvenient,” the relative clause is awkwardly attached; split this into two sentences or state directly that the schedule conflicts with your other classes. “As It conflicting my other classes schedule” lacks a correctly formed verb, while “it only offers once in a year” has an unclear subject and verb pattern. There are also issues with capitalization and punctuation, such as “It” mid-sentence and the missing full stop after “Kind regards.” More accurate clause construction would improve control.
