explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to cancel my enrollment in the upcoming course, and I would like to joint the same module in the next year.
There is an unexpected situation has arrived in my professional life. I have complled to work in the evening shift due to one of my colleagues who is going to home country for his personal reason. I am chosen for his replacment because I used to work in this shift and familiar about this role. For this reason, I cannot continue this course.
I would like to postpone my remaining module to next term. Therefore, I would not miss the important topics of it.
I would be deeply honoured if you provide advice on it. I would like to request you that If you allow me to rejoin it in the future without paying extra fee of this corse, I would really apreciate it.
I look forward to hearing from you at earliest your convenience.
Yours faithfully,
Raj Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you explain that evening-shift work prevents attendance, say you want to defer the module, and ask for advice about rejoining without an extra fee. The reason is relevant and gives useful context about covering for a colleague. This meets the core task well, but some details are less fully developed than others. In particular, “I would like to postpone my remaining module to next term” states your preference, while the request for advice is brief and does not ask about practical options such as transferring enrolment or retaining fees. Also, the opening says “next year,” whereas later you specify “next term”; make the intended timing consistent and clarify exactly what arrangement you are seeking.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: purpose, explanation, preferred study plan, request, and closing. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking phrases such as “For this reason” and “Therefore” help show relationships between ideas. The reader can follow the situation without difficulty. To make the organisation more polished, avoid using “Therefore” to connect the wish to postpone with the result that you will not miss topics, as the relationship is not fully clear. The two requests—advice and permission to rejoin without an extra fee—could also be combined and ordered more explicitly. Ensure the timing is consistent across the letter, since “next year” and “next term” currently create a small cohesion issue.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary appropriate to a formal administrative letter, including “enrollment,” “postpone,” “module,” and “rejoin,” and the reader can understand your main message. However, several inaccurate word choices, collocations, and spelling errors reduce precision and make the language less natural. For example, “joint the same module” appears to mean “join,” while “complled to work” and “replacment” are misspelled. Phrases such as “a situation has arrived” and “familiar about this role” are not idiomatic. Aim to learn common combinations for explaining work commitments and requesting a course deferral, and proofread spelling carefully; this would make your otherwise relevant vocabulary more effective.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause beginning “because” and a conditional request with “If you allow me…”. The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “There is an unexpected situation has arrived” combines two sentence structures; use one, such as “An unexpected situation has arisen.” In “I am chosen for his replacement,” the passive form and tense do not fit the past event, and “I would be deeply honoured if you provide advice” needs a suitable conditional form, such as “if you could provide advice.” Check articles, verb forms, and sentence construction, while continuing to use varied structures.
