IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

I am writing to notify you, that I am currently persuaing my Bachelor's degree and have noticed that I have been assigned in an evening course. Due to my part-time work schedule, I won't be able to attend it and want to persue the course next term instead or if possible transfer the course to different schedule such as morning or day course. I would like to get reconsideration for my issue.

I have been working at a fixed schedule as per my contract with employeer, that is Monday-Friday evenings 4:00PM to 10PM and I tried to change the schedule and tried to find the alternative. However, I was left two choice either to resign from my job or to take the course next term. I am basically dependent on this job for my daily living expenses due to which I take the decision to take the course next term.

It would have been great if I could have different circumstances and was able to take the course this semester as I am really looking forwad to gain my degree as early as possible to pursue a better career. If the course delivery is available at the other time's of the day such as morning or noon in this semester then, I would love to be enrolled at that time as I am free during these times of the day.

I would like to know about your recomendations on what can be done to overcome this situation as you might have faced many students with this same problem. Moreover, I am trying to find different job that has flexible so that I could continue this course. However, till I find another job I am stuck with this situation. I would be looking forward to you advice. You can directly call me at my number or email which is recorded in my student profile. Thank you!

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

You address all three points clearly: you explain that your evening work schedule conflicts with the course, state that you would prefer to defer until next term or transfer to a daytime class, and ask for advice. The practical details about your work hours and dependence on the job make the situation convincing, while your interest in completing your degree explains why you want a solution. The request for recommendations and the offer to be contacted also suit the purpose of a formal letter. To make the response even more complete, clarify whether you are formally requesting a deferral now or asking the recipient to consider a daytime transfer first; these options are both present, but their priority is not fully explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: it introduces the conflict, explains the work circumstances, considers a possible daytime alternative, and ends by requesting advice. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and linking expressions such as “However” and “Moreover” guide the reader through the explanation. Some connections are less smooth or slightly repetitive: the wish to take the course next term appears in the opening and again in the second paragraph, while the final paragraph moves from asking for recommendations to discussing a possible job change without a clear transition. A more conventional opening and closing, plus a sharper distinction between your preferred option and your backup plan, would make the organisation feel more consistently controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for explaining a scheduling problem and making a request, including “fixed schedule,” “alternative,” “flexible,” and “reconsideration.” These choices communicate the main points, and the reader can understand your circumstances. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “assigned in an evening course,” “get reconsideration for my issue,” and “has flexible.” There are also spelling errors in “persuaing,” “persue,” “employeer,” “lookin[g] forwad,” and “recomendations.” These do not prevent understanding, but careful proofreading and more natural formal phrases would improve precision and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “Due to,” “However,” and “as,” and most of the message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors occur in sentence construction and punctuation. For example, the comma after “notify you” is unnecessary, and “I have been assigned in an evening course” has an incorrect grammatical pattern. In “I was left two choice,” the plural form is needed, while “I would be looking forward to you advice” has an incorrect possessive form. The long opening sentence also joins several requests and explanations in a way that makes the structure harder to follow. Breaking it into shorter sentences and checking articles, plurals, and possessives would strengthen accuracy.
