IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have enrolled in an evening course but you have found that you are too busy to continue and would like to take the course next term instead.
explain the situation and why you cannot continue the course
say what you would like to do about your studies
ask for advice about what you can do about the situation
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to let you know that I am not able to continue my enrolled evening course this term due to busy schedule.
Unfortunately, as i am working part-time, so my employer requires my availability every evening. Evening time, our store gets a rush of people. Also, after doing this shift i feel tired and want some rest even though i cannot able to maintain my concentration on my this course.
Likewise, I try my best to stay focused and i am spending extra hours for it in the morning but still i am not able to do the progress.
I am requesting to you if you have any other best alternative to solve my problem like if any classes available in the morning sessions and any possibility to change my schedule from evening to morning. I would appreciate it.
Thank you for your consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Lovedeep

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You explain the main reason for leaving the course: your part-time job requires evening availability, and you feel tired after work. You also make a relevant request about moving to morning classes, so the reader can understand your immediate preference. However, the task asks what you would like to do about your studies next term, and this intention is not stated clearly; the letter focuses more on changing sessions now. The request for advice is also indirect and limited to asking about alternatives. To strengthen the response, explicitly say that you hope to defer your enrolment until next term, then ask what steps or arrangements are available.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall shape: it opens with its purpose, explains the work-related difficulty, makes a request, and closes politely. The sequence is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Unfortunately,” “Also,” and “Likewise” help connect the explanation. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent arrangement and shows some control of progression. However, “Likewise” does not express the relationship between the previous point and your efforts to study, while “so” after “as” makes the connection awkward. The main request is also packed into one long sentence. Use more precise links and separate the request into clear sentences, including one specifically asking about deferring to next term.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the situation, with relevant expressions such as “part-time,” “availability,” “rush of people,” and “stay focused.” The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, several phrases are unnatural or imprecise, including “continue my enrolled evening course,” “do the progress,” and “any other best alternative.” These choices make parts of the letter less fluent and sometimes obscure the exact request. Aim for more natural collocations and precise course-related language, such as explaining that you are unable to continue attending evening classes and asking about postponing your enrolment. This would improve clarity while preserving the polite tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, for example the sentence beginning “Unfortunately, as…” and the clause “even though…”. The main message remains understandable, but errors occur in these more ambitious structures and in basic sentence patterns. In “as I am working part-time, so…,” the two linking forms are incorrectly combined; “I cannot able to maintain” uses an incorrect verb construction; and “I am requesting to you if…” is not grammatically formed. There are also errors in “my this course” and inconsistent capitalisation of “I.” Use one connector at a time, check verb patterns such as “cannot maintain,” and simplify sentences when needed to improve accuracy.
