Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this modern era smoking is considered as one of the serious problems around the world. Every year 1/3rd of the people lose their lives because of smoking tobacco. In this essay I will provide you with all the relevant examples on how smoking affects human lives.

There is significant growth every year in the number of people who start smoking tobacco. This usually can be seen in age group between 14-60 years. Smoking not only damages the lungs which function as airbags but also develops different types of cancers - Throat cancer, mouth Cancer, lung cancer etc which leads to the death. For example statistics show almost 50% of deaths caused in year 2024 indicates the tobacco consumption as the main reason. The people who get habituated to this always has a different lifestyle when compared to normal people as they cannot eat or poop without tobacco. It not only affects the people who are smoking but also for the innocent people who are standing beside inhaling the same air. Tobacco also affects students careers.

Government rather than marking the products as a hazard should make it illegal to sell or buy tobacco goods.Government should impose a very high tax on the people growing or buying tobacco. Not only this but also government should make a judicial law to limit the growth of tobacco farming. For example in Chennai government considers the selling and buying of tobacco as illegal and whoever is caught will be sentenced for 15 years with a penalty. Having this in place most of the people this area reduces the use of tobacco.

In conclusion I would say government should implement some strict rules to avoid from having more chronic health diseases from consuming tobacco. This way world would be a better place to stay.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The essay addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of banning tobacco. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the health consequences are mentioned, the argument regarding the economic or social feasibility of a total ban is underdeveloped. The statistics provided (e.g., '50% of deaths in 2024') appear to be invented or lack credible sourcing, which weakens the persuasive impact. To improve, you should focus on providing more logical, real-world reasoning rather than relying on potentially inaccurate data. The position is consistent, but the depth of analysis could be improved to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive. For example, the transition between sentences in the second paragraph feels abrupt. While you use some linking phrases like 'Not only this but also', the flow between ideas could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, but the essay would benefit from a wider variety of linking words to connect complex arguments more effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'tobacco consumption', 'chronic health diseases', and 'judicial law'. However, there are some instances of awkward phrasing or inappropriate word choices, such as 'poop' (which is too informal for an IELTS essay) and 'habituated to this'. There are also minor errors in collocation. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more academic vocabulary and ensuring that your word choices are consistently formal and precise throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the government'), subject-verb agreement issues ('the people... always has'), and punctuation errors (missing spaces after periods). Some sentences are slightly disjointed, which impacts the overall fluency. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with articles and pluralization, and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures with fewer errors.
