Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays, legal actions should be charged on smoking due to it's dangerous disease causing reasons. I largely agree with the mentioned notion due to increasing lung infections and negative impact on new generation.

To commence with, if doing smoking becomes illegal then this will prevent many people from doing smoking and impose a positive impact on their health. To explicit, Many pupils have developed a habit of smoking and due to no restriction currently they fear freely enjoy smoking and unknowingly are damaging their lungs. Moreover, if smoking becomes illegal and punishments are imposed on the smokers and this will decrease the number of smokers, due to fear of getting punishment people will not try to smoke and transfer to a good living routine.

Furthermore, young youth in influence of smokers try to smoke and can themselves develop a bad habit of smoking. To explain, new generation people who wants to try everything they see in world unaware of its demerits get bad habits like smoking. Which will cause life- threatening illnesses, this can be solved by strict actions only. Even the selling of cigarettes should be banned so that no one can buy it and smoke. For example, WHO in 2019 did survey and found that, 70% of lung damage cases are found in a group of people aged 20 to 30 years old due to smoking in such a young age. Thus, implementing legal actions to ban smoking can protect the lives of people.

On the flip side, making smoking illegal can cause a big impact on some people who smoke just to get temporary relief from their stress. To elaborate it, many pupils do smoking when they fell their stress unbearable and prefer smoking to give their brain some relief and overthinking. For instance, a survey conduction by NGO in India on people who smokes found that more than half number of people gave reason for their smoking habit was just to get relief from mental stress. So, completely making smoking illegal can effect people like those seriously.

In conclusion, I partially agree that smoking should become illegal to protect people from health damaging problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that smoking should be illegal. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact on the younger generation and the health risks. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat repetitive and occasionally lacks depth. For instance, the argument regarding stress relief is introduced but not fully explored in terms of alternative solutions. The conclusion contradicts the introduction by stating 'partially agree' after previously stating 'I largely agree', which creates a slight inconsistency in the position. Overall, the response is well-structured and covers the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore', though some are used in a slightly mechanical or repetitive way. The referencing is generally clear, although some transitions between sentences feel abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the arguments for and against the topic. While the flow is generally smooth, the connection between the final conclusion and the body paragraphs could be more cohesive to ensure a stronger sense of progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'life-threatening illnesses' and 'demerits'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'legal actions should be charged on smoking', 'doing smoking', and 'new generation people'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the range and precision of the language. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on more natural collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement, article usage, and punctuation (e.g., 'it's' instead of 'its', 'a survey conduction' instead of 'a survey conducted'). Some sentences are slightly convoluted, such as 'if doing smoking becomes illegal then this will prevent many people from doing smoking'. Despite these errors, the student demonstrates an ability to construct complex sentences, and the errors rarely cause confusion for the reader. Increased attention to proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would improve the score.
