Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this fast-paced time, many youngsters are very fond of smoking. They are well-aware from their outcomes, but they are addicted. I believe that smoking can cause serious diseases; the government should take strict action against this. This essay will discuss the various reasons behind this trend.

To begin with, the primary reason behind this issue is that smoking can cause serious illness. In other words, it can cause cancer. For example, individuals who are addicted to smoking, after a stage, start suffering from breathing problems and lung issues. This way they can lead to many diseases and spoil their own life.

There are some strict actions that governments should take to get rid of this problem. For instance, the government should ban the manufacturing of these products. Moreover, they can also stop the import and export business of these materials. Furthermore, they can also increase the cost of these items so that everyone cannot afford this. These steps can be helpful to save our nation's people and their income. That can also help in saving their relationships with their families, which were at the last stage of being broken. In addition to this, awareness programs should be held to give knowledge about their outcomes.

To conclude, there is a wide range of problems related to this issue. That can cause more serious diseases to disrupt their lives. However, with the help of the government, we can take some actions to improve health, reduce the risk of wasting money, and save our relationships with our own people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The essay addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position that smoking should be made illegal. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention health risks and government intervention, the arguments lack depth and specific evidence. For instance, the suggestion to 'ban the manufacturing' is a strong point, but it could be better supported by discussing the economic or social implications of such a drastic policy. The essay tends to repeat the idea that smoking causes illness rather than exploring the 'extent' of your agreement or considering counter-arguments, which would strengthen the response and help reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central focus. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'For instance', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition from discussing government action to 'saving relationships' is abrupt and lacks a clear logical connection. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring that each sentence builds naturally upon the previous one will help improve the overall cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fast-paced', 'manufacturing', and 'awareness programs'. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'well-aware from their outcomes' (should be 'aware of the consequences') and 'spoil their own life'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'public health crisis', 'legislative measures', or 'detrimental effects'. The current vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message, but it lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is a good start. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'They are well-aware from their outcomes' and 'everyone cannot afford this' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). Additionally, some sentences are a bit repetitive in structure. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of complex grammatical forms, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, and pay closer attention to preposition usage and subject-verb agreement. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
