Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, many people believe smoking is bad for health and is caught heart related diseases and should be prohibited. I totally agree with this statement as it causes health problem, passive smoking harms others. This essay will explain that why should smoking be banned

The major reason is that the smoking causes serious problems, it causes lung cancer, heart diseases, stroke, and respiratory illnesses. As a result the lifespan of an individual also decreases. Moreover, the cost of healthcare increases and many people cannot afford to get treatment. For instance, many people who have smoking related issues put pressure on hospitals and healthcare services.

Another reason is the passive smokers also harms the non smokers. Non-smoker who is standing nearby also inhales harmful smoke that effects their health, the childrens and pregnant women adre also effected by the smoking community. Furthermore, everyone in this world have right to breath clean air. For instance, studies have shown that children who are living with parents who smoke are more effected by asthma and respiratory problems.

One more reason to add is the economic burden that is coming on the government who is providing treatment to prevent smoking by investing a huge amount of money. Also, with the smoking the workplace is also affected as less productivity is seen due to the illness.

To conclude, smoking causes alot of health problems and many people should raise concern to stop smoking as it affects the non-smoker community and provides burden on the authorities. It is the best decision that government should take to banned smoking for the betterment of the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant reasons for your agreement, such as health impacts, passive smoking, and economic burdens. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat repetitive and lacks depth. For example, the point about economic burden is mentioned briefly without specific examples of how government funds are diverted. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph provides a more detailed explanation or a more specific, illustrative example rather than listing multiple points that overlap in content.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'The major reason', 'Another reason', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where referencing is unclear, such as 'the smoking' used as a noun phrase. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother to improve the overall progression of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'respiratory illnesses', 'passive smokers', and 'economic burden'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'is caught heart related diseases' instead of 'causes heart-related diseases' and 'the childrens... are also effected' (should be 'affected'). The repetition of basic verbs like 'causes' and 'is' limits your score. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring correct word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('everyone... have right'), incorrect verb forms ('is caught'), and confusion between 'effect' and 'affect'. Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are comma splices, such as 'The major reason is that the smoking causes serious problems, it causes lung cancer...'. While the meaning is usually clear, the frequency of these errors prevents a higher score.
