Student answer (Band 7.0)
Smoking is the harmful to human health and is responsible for many serious illness. While I strongly agree that smoking is extremely harmful but I do not totally agree that is should be made completely illegal. Instead governments should have to put strict regulations and public education to reduce smoking rates.
On the one hand, smoking has several consequences for both smokers and non-smokers. Cigarette has thousands of harmful contains that almost damage every organ in the body. Moreover, passive smoking also put innocent people health in the danger especially, children and elderly. Government also spend billions of dollars each year to treating smoking related illness, placing a heavy burden on the health care system. Therefore, reducing tobacco consumption should be a public health priority.
On the other hand, making smoking entirely illegal may be not the solution. History has shown that the banning popular products often leads illegal tread and black market. More practical approach would be impose high taxes on tobacco products, ban smoking in public places, restrict advertising and provide free support for people who wants to quit smoking. If smoking were decreased significantly than people quality of life would improve and also reduced that health care burden on government and that budget could be invested on the education and infrastructure.
In conclusion, smoking is very harmful leads serious diseases for instance, heart attack, stroke, lung cancer so, government should take strong action to discourage it. Strict regulations, education and quit smoking program are likely to be more effective than a total ban.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly state your position in the introduction, arguing against a total ban while supporting strict regulation. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, with the first body paragraph focusing on the health and economic consequences of smoking, and the second exploring the practical alternatives to prohibition. The argument is consistent throughout. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples or data to support your claims, such as mentioning a country that has successfully implemented high taxes or public smoking bans to illustrate your point more concretely.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader through your argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the phrase 'that health care burden' in the third paragraph, which lacks a clear antecedent. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow, though some sentences could be linked more fluidly to improve the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'public health priority', 'infrastructure', and 'regulations'. However, there are several instances of inaccurate word choice and collocation, such as 'harmful contains' (should be 'harmful components' or 'substances'), 'illegal tread' (should be 'illegal trade'), and 'treating smoking related illness' (should be 'treating smoking-related illnesses'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage. Expanding your range of collocations would help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use conditional sentences ('If smoking were decreased...'), there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles, pluralization, and verb forms (e.g., 'is the harmful to human health', 'people quality of life', 'leads serious diseases'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'Government also spend billions of dollars each year to treating'. These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions and articles.
