IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Smoking can cause serious illnesses and should be made illegal.
To what extent do you agree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Smoking can lead to serious health problems, and it should be banned. I completely agree with this statement for several reasons. It is addictive and causes respiratory illness. This essay will explain the main reasons supporting this viewpoint.
The primary reason is that it is so addictive as person will feel compelled to do the same thing repeatedly. This is because if a person starts, then there is a high chance of becoming a chain smoker. For example, smoking habits usually begin in adolescence, when everyone wants to experience new things.
Another point to consider is that due to smoking, the lungs and respiratory system get affected. Inhaling that smoke is not good for health because the chemical which is present can also cause cancer. For instance, it is found that the majority of deaths in the UK were because of smoking.
In conclusion, I believe that smoking can cause serious diseases and should be forbidden by law.
Overall, this essay has demonstrated why this view is most appropriate.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 169 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While you clearly state your position in the introduction and conclusion, the supporting arguments are underdeveloped. For instance, the point about addiction is mentioned but not fully explored in terms of its societal impact or the feasibility of a total ban. To improve, you must expand your arguments with more detailed explanations and specific examples to meet the length requirement and provide a more comprehensive response to the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'The primary reason', 'Another point to consider', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical, and the limited length prevents the use of more sophisticated linking words or complex paragraph structures. To achieve a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that the transition between sentences is smoother and less repetitive.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks range and precision. You rely on common terms like 'serious health problems', 'good for health', and 'new things'. While these are accurate, they do not demonstrate the flexibility or the use of less common lexical items required for higher bands. There is some repetition of basic vocabulary. To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific collocations and academic vocabulary related to public health and legislation to enhance the sophistication of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'as person will feel' (missing article) and 'the chemical which is present' (slightly awkward phrasing). However, these errors do not impede communication. The punctuation is generally correct. To improve, aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, and ensure that articles and subject-verb agreement are consistently accurate throughout your writing.
