Student answer (Band 6.5)

The habit of consuming cigarettes is adopted by many across different age groups. Smoking can be the main root cause of various illnesses and should be illegal. This essay will argue why habit is harmful and should be dropped immediately.

First of all, smoking is considered to lower stress level. secondly, with the busy life, it is hard for the mind to not be in constant state and the cheap prices of these products make it easy solution for them to choose to be opted for. For instance, a college student has academic pressure and he/ she buy a cigarette at very low price.

However, smoking is a habit that comes with a serious consequences such a grave illness. Moreover, a smoker is more prone to diseases like lung cancer which ruins the life of people. Apart from it, passive smoking is more dangerous to active smoking, the person who does not like smoking but that person also affected by smoking.

To resolve this issue, government should enact some stringent laws against smoking . At least, it should be banned on public areas as well as smokers have to pay fines for this. In addition, government should organise some compaigns to educate people that smoking is really bad for them. It damage their organs very badly. Therefore, they should be aware of its harmful effects.

In conclusion, i would like to restate that this essay stated why smoking is harmful and needs to be made illegal. In my opinion, by educating people this can be reduced to some extent.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The essay addresses the prompt by discussing the health risks of smoking and suggesting it should be illegal. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention stress relief as a reason for smoking, the argument for why it should be illegal is not fully explored in depth. The position is clear, but the supporting points, such as the mention of passive smoking, are brief and could be better extended with more specific examples or logical consequences. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph provides a more thorough explanation of the 'why' behind your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear introduction and conclusion. You use some cohesive devices like 'First of all', 'However', and 'In addition' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. For instance, the transition from the benefits of smoking to the health risks in the second paragraph is a bit sudden. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the sentence 'the person who does not like smoking but that person also affected by smoking', which lacks grammatical cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning, such as 'stringent laws', 'passive smoking', and 'academic pressure'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'easy solution for them to choose to be opted for' and 'compaigns' (spelling error). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. To improve, try to use more sophisticated collocations and ensure that words are used in their correct context to avoid awkward phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'smoking is more dangerous to active smoking' (should be 'than'), 'it damage their organs' (should be 'damages'), and 'in public areas' (should be 'in public places'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the placement of commas and the use of 'he/she'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
