Student answer (Band 6.0)
Indeed, smoking is biggest concer for today's generation. It can cause serious illnesses and should be made illegal. I totally agree with this notion and i will be explicated my views in upcoming paragraphs.
To commence with, smoking is dangerous for health which increases the health risks.Smoking is considered one of the major causes of serious health problems, and some people believe that it should be made illegal. I completely agree with this opinion because smoking not only damages individuals’ health but also affects the people around them.
Secondly, smoking does not only affect smokers but also harms non-smokers through passive smoking. People who live or work near smokers may also experience health problems. Therefore, making smoking illegal could protect the health of the wider community and create a safer environment.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that smoking should be banned because it causes serious health problems and negatively affects other people. Although some people argue that individuals should have the freedom to smoke, protecting public health is more important.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 170 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas, as the arguments remain superficial and lack sufficient supporting evidence or examples. While you clearly state your position in the introduction and conclusion, the body paragraphs are underdeveloped. To improve, you must expand on your points by providing specific examples, statistics, or logical consequences to reach the required length and demonstrate a more thorough exploration of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of your argument. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' to signal transitions. However, the connection between sentences is sometimes repetitive, and the overall flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and better referencing to avoid repeating the word 'smoking' so frequently. The structure is logical, but the brevity of the content limits the complexity of the cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on simple, repetitive terms like 'dangerous', 'serious', and 'health problems'. There are also minor errors, such as 'concer' (concern) and 'explicated' (which is used incorrectly here; 'explain' or 'elaborate on' would be more natural). To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and topic-specific vocabulary related to public health and legislation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'i will be explicated' (incorrect verb form) and 'smoking is biggest concer' (missing article 'the'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, specifically with spacing after periods. While you attempt complex structures, the frequency of these errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
