Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, there has been a quite more awareness seen realted to smoking that it is hazardous to health. Due to this, people are of opinion that it should be made illegal. I completely agree with this statement as it negatively impacts physical and mental health.

To begin with, smoking has a number of consequences. Firstly, it deteriotes a peron's health and causes numnerous diseases such as lung cancer, heart problems and other serious illnesses. People smoke to avoid stress for sometime however, they do not realise how it is impacting their health. For example, some people believe that smoking fewer times a week is not bad instead of realising it is still detrimental for health and results may not be immediate but he will jave to face health issues eventually. Therefore, a ban on smoking will definetely help people to not choose smoking as a stress reliever and should go for other healthy and harmful options.

Moreover, people get so much addicted to smoking that even if they want to quite they feel helpless as they have to go through withdrawal symptoms which they find difficult to deal with. To illustrate, there has been facilites opened for people to help taping off smoking and few medicines are also available in the market but due to excessive addiction nothing helps them. Subsequently, if smoking is made illegal then people will not get into this vicious circle.

To conclude, making smoking illegal will have societal benefits and will save people from getting into these unhealthy habits which downgrades their life as well as their family's life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of banning smoking. The ideas are relevant, focusing on health consequences and the difficulty of overcoming addiction. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument about 'stress relief' is a bit repetitive, and the suggestion that people should choose 'harmful options' (likely a typo for 'harmless') is confusing. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the societal or economic implications of a ban, rather than just repeating that smoking is unhealthy. The position is consistent, but the supporting arguments lack depth and nuance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'To conclude' are used to signal the progression of ideas. However, the flow within paragraphs is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and minor logical gaps. For example, the transition between the health risks and the suggestion of a ban could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, but the mechanical use of some linking words makes the writing feel slightly formulaic. Overall, the structure is logical and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but there are several spelling errors ('realted', 'deteriotes', 'peron', 'numnerous', 'jave', 'definetely', 'quite', 'facilites') and word choice issues. The phrase 'taping off' is used incorrectly in this context (likely meaning 'tapering off'), and 'harmful options' contradicts your argument. While you attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'withdrawal symptoms' and 'vicious circle', the frequent spelling mistakes and imprecise word choices prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Improving accuracy in spelling and collocation is essential.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'there has been a quite more awareness', 'people are of opinion', and 'should go for other healthy and harmful options'. Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent throughout the text. While you attempt complex sentences, they often contain errors that slightly impede the flow. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring that your sentence structures are not only complex but also grammatically sound.
