Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a position on whether smoking should be illegal. However, the essay is under the 250-word minimum, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the position is clear, the arguments are somewhat repetitive and lack depth. For instance, the point about 'holistic development' is mentioned but not fully explained or supported with concrete evidence. The conclusion introduces a new, slightly contradictory idea about raising the age limit rather than banning it entirely, which weakens the overall coherence of the argument. To improve, you should expand on your main points with more detailed examples and ensure your conclusion aligns with your initial stance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the progression of ideas is often disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical (e.g., 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'In conclusion'). There are instances where the connection between sentences is unclear, such as the transition between the health impacts of smoking and the influence of advertisements. Additionally, referencing is occasionally confusing, particularly the use of 'they' and 'it', which makes it difficult for the reader to identify the intended subject. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words will help the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally basic and repetitive. There are several spelling errors, such as 'desase' (disease) and 'resperiorty' (respiratory), and word choice issues like 'bad evil' and 'holstic'. The range of vocabulary is limited, relying on simple descriptors rather than more precise academic terminology. To reach a higher band, you should focus on learning collocations and more sophisticated synonyms for common words. For example, instead of 'bad', use 'detrimental' or 'harmful'. Expanding your vocabulary through reading academic articles will help you express your ideas with greater precision and variety.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'most of youngsters influenced'), incorrect preposition usage (e.g., 'According by'), and sentence structure (e.g., 'it is not effect on the lungs but also all over body structure'). The range of sentence structures is limited, with a heavy reliance on simple sentences. To improve, you should practice using complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses and conditional sentences, while paying closer attention to basic grammar rules like verb forms and article usage.
