Student answer (Band 6.5)
Smoking can cause fatal diseases, and it has been suggested that it should be made illegal. I am completely agree with this viewpoint, and I will prove my stance in the ensuing paragraphs before drawing a rational conclusion at the end.
To begin with, there are many diseases which are directly linked to smoking. Chronic smoker are at a risk of developing many severe diseases. For example, according to one study, 80-90% of smokers have either lung cancer or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease(COPD) in their later life. Unfortunately, we do not have any medicine to cure these illnesses. As a result, person will suffer more, and in extreme cases they might died too.
Additionally, passive smoking is equally dangerous to other people as active smoking. To explain, smoking is also dangerous for people who are living near smoker. For example, if parents are smoking, then they are also harming their children even though the children are not smoking. Moreover, on overage one chronic smoker spend 10-20$ per day to buy cigarette, which is a significant amount in total in a year. So, it is also not a budget friendly. In order to prevent such circumstances, government officials should make smoking illegal.
In conclusion, smoking is very dangerous to life, as it caused many fatal and untreatable diseases such as cancer and COPD. Additionally, it is not just harming the person who like to smoke, it is also harmful for nearby people, and because of these reasons I am supporting view of making the smoking illegal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The main body paragraphs provide relevant arguments regarding health risks and the impact of passive smoking. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about the financial cost of smoking is introduced but not fully connected to the argument for illegality. To reach a higher band, ensure that every supporting point directly reinforces your central thesis. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, though it could be more impactful by synthesizing the main points rather than simply restating them.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more precise. For example, in the second paragraph, the transition between the health statistics and the consequence of suffering could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents will help improve the overall cohesion of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'chronic smoker', 'passive smoking', and 'untreatable diseases'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'person will suffer more' (should be 'people will suffer') and 'not a budget friendly' (should be 'not budget-friendly'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more sophisticated or academic synonyms would elevate your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'I am completely agree' (should be 'I completely agree'), 'Chronic smoker are' (should be 'Chronic smokers are'), and 'they might died' (should be 'they might die'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and pluralization. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
