Student answer (Band 6.0)

Smoking has been dangerous to health that is why it should be seen as an illegal act. The health Organization has also made this known to those that have form it to be a habit. From my own point of view, i agree that smoking causes ill health to many people these days.

To begin with, smoking has done more harm to people than good. When i visited federal Medical Centre last month, i saw both young and old suffering liver, heart and kidney problems. This is as a result of smoking . many people smoke for no reason, even though, they see it as something they can use to reduce cold. Smoking has caused mortality rate in our country, because they made it legal and it is very cheap to buy it and smoke it to stupor. this is why it needs to be made illegal.

Again, i another chronic disease like brain hemorrhage could be caused by this smoking too. This is a type of sickness that cause blood to splash in the brain where it is not supposed. Many individuals who smoke with high blood pressure do fall prey to this type of illness. this can claim the life of someone within an hour if proper medication is not taken.

With these points, smoking has to be banned, so as to make all the smokers to stop it and to help them extend their lives expectancy. all smoking causes are chronic illnesses that make individuals spend excessively and also lead one to early grave.

In conclusion, let the government make smoking a prohibited act and always take drastic measures on anyone caught smoking. that will reduce all these sicknesses like heart failure, myocardiac infarction etc. it will also help the people smoking to have savings and be responsible.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of banning smoking. The ideas are relevant, such as the health risks and the burden on the healthcare system. However, the development is somewhat limited. While you mention visiting a medical center, the argument remains largely anecdotal rather than analytical. Some points, such as the claim that people smoke to 'reduce cold,' are not well-supported or logically sound in an academic context. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are fully extended with more sophisticated reasoning and clearer links between the health risks and the necessity of a legal ban.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of your argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or repetitive. For example, the transition 'Again, i another chronic disease' is awkward and grammatically incorrect. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the use of 'they' in 'because they made it legal,' where the antecedent (the government) is not explicitly stated. While there is an overall logical flow, the lack of sophisticated linking words and occasional errors in referencing prevent the essay from achieving a higher score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You use some specific medical terms like 'brain hemorrhage' and 'myocardiac infarction,' which is positive. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'form it to be a habit' (instead of 'formed a habit') and 'smoke it to stupor.' Additionally, there are minor spelling and capitalization issues throughout the text. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring that your word choices are contextually appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'sickness that cause'), incorrect article usage, and punctuation errors (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I'). The sentence structure is often repetitive, and some sentences are poorly constructed, such as 'Smoking has been dangerous to health that is why it should be seen as an illegal act.' While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar limits the score.
