Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the writer addresses the topic of smoking and expresses a clear opinion that it should be illegal, the arguments are underdeveloped and lack the depth required for a higher band. The personal anecdote about the workplace is relevant but lacks the necessary expansion to fully explore the broader social and economic implications of banning smoking. Because the response is 63 words short, the task is only partially addressed, leading to a lower score for task achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a clear structure. Paragraphing is present but the flow of ideas is disjointed. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link sentences and paragraphs, making the progression of arguments feel mechanical and repetitive. For example, the transition between the general health risks and the personal anecdote is abrupt. The use of referencing is also weak, with pronouns often lacking clear antecedents. To improve, the student should focus on using linking words such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'in addition' to create a more logical and cohesive argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, relying on simple, everyday language such as 'really like', 'hating', and 'very common'. There is little attempt to use academic or topic-specific vocabulary related to public health or legislation. Some word choices are inaccurate, such as 'lungs cancer' instead of 'lung cancer' and 'take with' instead of 'talk to'. The range is insufficient to express complex ideas effectively. To reach a higher band, the student needs to incorporate more precise terminology and demonstrate a better grasp of collocations and formal register.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('I am also feel'), article usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are simple or run-on, lacking the variety of complex structures expected at higher levels. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with a lack of capital letters at the start of sentences and missing commas. The errors are pervasive and occur in almost every sentence, which significantly affects the clarity of the writing. A focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors is essential.
