Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is indeed true, that smooking is injurions to health and should be prohibited by the goverment. I strongly agree to this statment to a large extent, many may disagree. My opinion will be justified in the following paragraphs.

The foremost argument to support my view is the smoking is addictive and may leads to respiratory disoder. For instance, excessive smoking fume can cause lung cancer and breathing issues in healthy individuals. Smoke not only affect the person who smoke cigarettes but also af affect other people surrounding them. Thus, passive smoking may encourage non smoker to smoke. Additionally, many people developed irritating symtoms such as nausea, vomiting and redness in eyes after come in contact with smoke fume.

Furthermore, people openly smoke in public area such as park, bus stations, and railway stations. This may harm children as well as elderly people, they easily get affected by smoking because of weak immune system. Therefore smoking should be completely resistricted in public places. Moreover, habit of smoking may contribute to criminal activities. For instance, an addiction can lead to financial difficulties, and may engage in illegal activities to obtain money for to support their addiction.

On other hand, some people may argue that smoking is an individual's personal choice and, therefore, should not be forbidden. If smoking were completely banned, smoker might expericence psycological distress or withdrawal symptoms. Therefore, opponents argue that a complete ban could have negative consequences for smokers.

In conclusion, althought some people believe that smoking is matter of personal choice. I believe that stricter regulations or bans are necessary to protect public health. By taking necessary steps, we can make the world a better place to live.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in favor of banning smoking. The ideas are relevant, such as the health risks of passive smoking and the impact on vulnerable groups. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument linking smoking to criminal activities is a bit tenuous and lacks sufficient explanation to be fully convincing. While the position is clear throughout, the essay would benefit from more nuanced exploration of the counter-argument and a more robust justification for the proposed ban to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'The foremost argument', 'Additionally', 'Furthermore', and 'On other hand'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly inaccurate, such as 'On other hand' (missing 'the') and the repetitive structure of the opening sentences. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the health arguments to the social arguments and finally the counter-argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but there are frequent spelling errors that occasionally distract the reader, such as 'smooking', 'injurions', 'disoder', 'symtoms', 'psycological', and 'expericence'. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. There are some attempts at collocation, but they are often marred by the aforementioned spelling issues or minor word-choice inaccuracies, such as 'come in contact with smoke fume' instead of 'exposure to smoke'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'the smoking is addictive and may leads' (subject-verb agreement), 'not only affect the person who smoke' (should be 'smokes'), and 'may engage in illegal activities to obtain money for to support' (redundant preposition). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to suggest a lack of control over complex structures.
