Student answer (Band 7.0)
Smoking is always a menace for society. It is affecting the life of individuals in numerous ways. I certainly agree with the statement that smoking leads to various cardiovascular diseases and should be banned by the government.
Smoking has detrimental effects on both the active smokers and the passive smokers. Mostly individuals smoke in public places or around their families or friends and this practice can cause issues to them as well because they are inhaling the same malicious air with them. Moreover, smoking cigarettes or being in such environment can cause diseases especially associated with lungs such as lung cancer and asthma. This is because lungs are the major organs involved in the smoking. Additionally, teenagers are also addicted to smoking e-cigarettes known as 'vapes'. These vapes are the modern version of traditional cigarettes and are destroying the life and health of the young generation in the similar way.
All these tobacco products such as cigarettes, vapes and nicotine tablets should be banned by the government and they should run awareness campaigns to educate the population regarding its harmful outcomes. This should be done through TV adverts, social media, posters, and education camps in neighborhoods. Additionally, individuals who are smoking in public should be heavily penalized by law enforcement authorities. Consequently, this could contribute towards better and healthy lifestyles of citizens and reduce stress on the healthcare system. For example, prohibited sales and declaring trade of tobacco products illegal significantly reduced the cancer cases in India.
To sum up, the consumption of tobacco can negatively affect individuals and their families. Authorities should ban sale of such products and raise awareness among individuals. Therefore, I believe a balanced approach, combining careful planning with strong and strict laws against tobacco, is the most practical solution.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in favor of banning smoking. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of India's tobacco policies and the health risks associated with vaping. The argument is developed logically, moving from the health impacts to the proposed solutions. While the ideas are well-supported, the development could be slightly more nuanced to reach a higher band, perhaps by acknowledging counter-arguments or exploring the economic implications of a total ban. Overall, the response is focused and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the health impacts from the proposed solutions. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Additionally', 'Consequently', and 'To sum up' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the relationship between the problem (smoking) and the solution (government intervention) is clearly established. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some transitions could be slightly more sophisticated to improve the flow further.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for some precision. Phrases like 'detrimental effects', 'malicious air', and 'heavily penalized' demonstrate a good range. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'malicious air' (which is slightly unnatural; 'harmful' or 'toxic' would be better) and 'declaring trade of tobacco products illegal' (which is a bit clunky). However, the vocabulary is generally appropriate for the context and does not impede communication. The student successfully uses topic-specific terminology like 'cardiovascular diseases' and 'passive smokers'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and complex structures are attempted with reasonable success, such as 'This is because lungs are the major organs involved in the smoking.' However, there are occasional errors, such as 'Mostly individuals smoke' (should be 'Most individuals') and 'in the similar way' (should be 'in a similar way'). Punctuation is generally accurate. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the errors present do not cause difficulty for the reader, fitting the criteria for a solid band 6.5 or 7.0.
