Student answer (Band 6.0)

Smoking is injurious to health and cause life-threatening diseases. It is argued that it should be banned. I completely agree with this statement to a major extent as it can affect the health of others and also waste of money for the person. This essay will discuss the reasons behind this phenomenon in detail.

The first reason that smoking should be made illegal is that it affects others respiratory health. The smoke coming from the smokers in the public place inhale by the other person which is stand next to him. It is called passive smoker and it affects their respiratory organs such as lungs. As a result, their is chance that they can also develop respiratory diseases like asthma. For instance, in a train a person is smoking and a non smoker is sitting next to him. Additionally, they are daily commuters so they travel daily in a same way next to each other. After many year the other person also develops the breathing problem as he took smokes form the smoker daily.

Another reason is it disturbs the monthly budget of the family. Nowadays cigarettes are expensive. Instead of spending money on purchasing cigarette person can spend this money on daily needs of the family. Moreover, if smoking is banned, person can invest this money to buy healthy foods for his family.

However, it can not be possible to make smoking illegal as cigarette making industry is very massive. Apart from that, many people are depend on smoking factories for the employment.

To conclude, although to ban smoking is a debatable issue. However, this essay firmly believe that it should not allow as it affects others health and smoker can use this money on other necessary family expenses instead of buying cigarettes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While the health impact of passive smoking is explained, the argument regarding personal finances is less convincing as a justification for a total legal ban. The counter-argument provided in the fourth paragraph is relevant but lacks depth, and the conclusion contradicts the earlier stance by stating it is a 'debatable issue' after previously stating 'I completely agree'. To improve, ensure that your arguments are fully extended with more sophisticated reasoning and maintain consistency in your position from the introduction to the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'The first reason', 'Another reason', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'In addition, they are daily commuters so they travel daily in a same way'. The referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, which helps the overall structure, but the logical progression within paragraphs could be more refined to reach a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'respiratory organs' and 'life-threatening diseases'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'waste of money for the person' instead of 'a financial burden' and 'take smokes form the smoker'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic phrasing. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary to express complex ideas more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader, such as 'cause life-threatening diseases' (should be 'causes'), 'the smoke... inhale by the other person' (should be 'is inhaled'), and 'their is chance' (should be 'there is a chance'). Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent throughout the text. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the accuracy of basic structures and proofreading for common errors would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
