Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 180 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas, as the arguments remain superficial and lack sufficient supporting evidence or examples. While the essay addresses the prompt by taking a clear position, the under-length nature of the response means that the task is only partially addressed. To improve, you must expand on your arguments with more detailed explanations and concrete examples to reach the required length and depth expected at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'There is not doubt' and 'As a result, it cost may effect county's economy.' The progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed due to the brevity of the paragraphs. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that is fully developed before moving to the next point.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, often relying on basic terms. There are several errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'fully restricted on smoking' instead of 'a total ban on smoking' and 'illegal solutions' instead of 'illegal activities' or 'black market.' Spelling errors like 'tabbaco' also detract from the quality of the writing. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to use more precise vocabulary and collocations related to the topic of public health and government policy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('Some people argues', 'smoking cause many problems'), incorrect verb forms ('are experience', 'is not solve'), and awkward sentence structures. The range of grammatical structures is limited, with a heavy reliance on simple sentences. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, particularly subject-verb agreement and the correct use of auxiliary verbs, before attempting more complex structures.
