Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of banning smoking. However, the development of ideas is limited. The essay is under the 250-word minimum, which negatively impacts the depth of the argument. The points regarding the younger generation and the availability of products are relevant, but they are not fully extended or supported with sufficient detail. The response lacks a formal structure, such as a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, which prevents a more thorough exploration of the topic. To improve, you should aim to expand your arguments with specific examples or logical consequences and ensure you meet the minimum word count requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks clear paragraphing, consisting of only two long blocks of text. The progression of ideas is somewhat repetitive, and the transition between the two main points is abrupt. Cohesive devices are used sparingly and often incorrectly, such as the run-on sentences that make it difficult to follow the logical flow. For example, the transition between the description of the two generations and the argument for a ban is not clearly signaled. To improve, focus on using clear topic sentences for each paragraph and employing a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') to connect your ideas more effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, with frequent spelling errors that occasionally impede readability (e.g., 'Habbit', 'diffferent', 'illelagal', 'ebvery', 'cigrates', 'convienent'). The range of vocabulary is limited to common words, and there is little attempt to use more sophisticated or topic-specific terminology. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in word choice and spelling significantly lowers the score. To improve, focus on learning the correct spelling of common words and expanding your vocabulary related to health and social issues to express your ideas with more precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors, particularly in sentence structure, punctuation, and subject-verb agreement. Many sentences are run-on, lacking proper punctuation to separate independent clauses (e.g., 'smoking culture is divided into two diffferent parts one is...'). There are also consistent errors with articles and pluralization (e.g., 'there healths', 'youngerone'). The range of grammatical structures is limited, relying mostly on simple or poorly constructed complex sentences. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence punctuation, specifically the use of periods to separate distinct ideas, and review basic grammar rules regarding plurals and possessive pronouns.
