Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of banning smoking. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention health benefits and the impact on others, the arguments remain repetitive and lack depth. For instance, the point about 'campaigns' is introduced but not fully linked to the central argument of making smoking illegal. To improve, ensure each paragraph introduces a distinct, well-supported idea that directly contributes to your overall stance. The conclusion is a bit brief and simply restates the introduction rather than summarizing the main points effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'To commence with' and 'Apart from that' are used, but the logical flow between sentences is sometimes disjointed. For example, the transition between the health risks of smoking and the suggestion of government campaigns is abrupt. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the use of 'they' when referring to the government or the public. Improving the variety and precision of linking words will help the essay flow more naturally.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. You rely on basic phrasing, such as 'biggest problems' and 'serious illness'. There are also some noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'award public' (should be 'educate the public') and 'quite frankly' (likely meant 'quit'). While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of sophisticated or less common vocabulary limits the score. To improve, focus on learning collocations related to public health and policy-making.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('government should consider this illegal and I would not only beneficial'), missing articles, and incorrect verb forms ('government can held campaigns'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas and periods. While the meaning is usually understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would be highly beneficial.
