Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of banning smoking. The ideas are relevant, covering health risks, passive smoking, genetic issues, and the impact on youth. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'future worriers' is unclear and lacks logical depth. While the position is consistent, the supporting arguments are often repetitive or lack the necessary nuance to reach a higher band. The essay covers all parts of the task, but the explanation of ideas is sometimes superficial, preventing a more comprehensive exploration of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Moreover', and 'To conclude'. However, the use of these devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. For example, 'perspective reasons are in the following paragraphs' is an awkward transition. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'instead who consuming it', which makes the comparison difficult to follow. The progression of ideas is generally logical, but the internal cohesion within sentences is frequently disrupted by grammatical errors, which impacts the overall flow of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward word choices and non-standard collocations, such as 'some forks believes' (folks/people), 'than shrinks it' (then), and 'future worriers' (warriors). The student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'genetic abnormalities' and 'maternal circulation', which is positive. However, the frequent errors in word formation and usage occasionally impede the reader's understanding. To improve, the student should focus on learning common collocations and ensuring word forms are used correctly in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently marred by grammatical errors. There are persistent issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'all the airways gets blocks' and 'government should takes'. Additionally, there are errors in verb tense and article usage throughout the text. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the high frequency of basic grammatical errors makes the writing feel unpolished. The student needs to focus on mastering basic sentence construction, particularly subject-verb agreement and the correct use of auxiliary verbs, before attempting more complex structures.
