Student answer (Band 6.0)
tobacco consumption is widely recognized as on of the most dangerous public health cercens in modern society leading to millions of deaths every year from various diseases. While I agree that Government should implement some severe restrictions on smoking as It causes severe
health issues, I believe a total ban is impractical solution.
On the on hand, there are many reasons that why smoking should be entirely ban. Firstly, smoking consumption can lead to multiple ailments including, Cancer, Cardiovascular disease, Respiratory Conditions, Type 2 Diabetes. Apart from that smoking lowers immune function and accelerates bone density loss, raising the risk of hip fractures. Consequently, these illnesses cost global economies billions annually in medical treatments and intensive hospital care. Lowering smoking rates immediately frees up medical infrastructure and resources.
Secondly, Businesses experience fewer sick days, lower healthcare insurance payouts, and higher productivity when employees are smoke-free.
On the other hand, a total and immediate ban could spark severe unintended consequences. Tobacco is highly addictive, and abruptly banning its sale would likely create a massive underground black market. This would not only empower criminal networks but also deprive governments of significant tax revenues used to fund public infrastructure. A more pragmatic approach, therefore, is the gradual implementation of generational smoking bans-smililar to policies recently proposed in various countries- where the legal purchasing age is raised every year, eventually phasing smoking out entirely without causing an economic shock.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position against a total ban, favoring a more pragmatic approach. However, the essay is incomplete, ending abruptly in the conclusion without finishing the final sentence. Furthermore, the word count is 247 words, falling just short of the 250-word minimum requirement. While the ideas are relevant and well-developed in the body paragraphs, the failure to complete the essay and the under-length penalty significantly impact the score. To improve, ensure you fully develop your conclusion and meet the minimum word count to avoid a penalty.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding attempt. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two sides of the argument. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Consequently', and 'On the other hand' are used appropriately to guide the reader. However, the abrupt ending in the conclusion disrupts the flow and coherence of the final section. Referencing is generally clear, though some minor mechanical errors in punctuation and spelling slightly detract from the overall professional presentation of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'pragmatic approach', 'unintended consequences', and 'medical infrastructure'. However, there are several spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'cercens' (concerns), 'smililar' (similar), 'enforement' (enforcement), and 'liberit' (liberties). These errors are noticeable but do not generally impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on proofreading for spelling accuracy and try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations to enhance the precision of your arguments.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional structure in the second body paragraph. There are several grammatical slips, including 'on of the' (one of the), 'reasons that why', and 'a outright' (an outright). Additionally, the incomplete final sentence is a significant grammatical issue. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors and the lack of a finished sentence structure limit the score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage to improve your accuracy.
