Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent days, habit of smoking is gradually increasing. This adverse habit could cause harmfull diseases. Therefore some people are asking to make it illegal in a country. I support this idea of prohibiting smoking cigarette and other related lethal substances because it leads human to the end of life and family faces hard time.

First reason to make it illegal is habit of smoking is not easy to quit. Although smoking substance were made expensive, smoker spent more money due to addiction. For instance, Once individual gets addicted, it is impossible to stop smoking. Even if their family tries to make them understand about its lethal effect they continue to smoke irrespective to high price.

Another key point is that smoking affects their family in many ways. Due to this bad habit the smoke inhale and exhale by the person not only affect hum but also to the people in surrounding. Most of the time family members are close to them including children due to this harmful disease like cancer are caused. For example, person smoking ten cigaratte while sitting next to his children dont know that the smoke coming out of it is inhale by everyone. Resulatantly, kids in the small age get the dangerous disease like TB.

In conclusion, smokers could not stop smoking by themselves or by any wellwishers. Hence it is significant for government to take a strict action and ban this harmful substance. Due to smoking our family is also suffering so, it is better that making it illegal would save some lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that smoking should be made illegal due to health risks and family impacts. Main ideas are presented, such as addiction making it hard to quit and second-hand smoke harming children, which correspond to the Band 6 descriptor of addressing all parts with relevant ideas, though some are under-developed. For instance, the discussion on addiction is slightly repetitive and the example regarding TB lacks clinical precision, but the position remains clear throughout. To reach a higher band, the student should provide more extended, sophisticated supporting examples and avoid generalisations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is arranged coherently with a recognizable introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct ideas, aligning with Band 6. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or faulty, such as 'First reason to make it illegal is habit of smoking' and 'Due to this bad habit the smoke inhale and exhale'. Referencing and logical transitions between sentences can occasionally be confusing, which prevents a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'addiction', 'prohibiting', and 'lethal substances'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'harmfull diseases' instead of 'harmful diseases', 'smoker spent' instead of 'smokers spend', and 'inhale and exhale' instead of 'inhaled and exhaled'. Spelling errors like 'cigaratte' and 'Resulatantly' also appear. These errors do not impede overall communication, placing the vocabulary firmly at the Band 6 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writing uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('Even if their family tries to make them understand...') and subordinate clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('in a country' instead of 'in the country'), subject-verb agreement issues ('family faces' or 'smoker spent'), and awkward phrasing like 'it leads human to the end of life'. While these errors occasionally cause the reader some difficulty, communication remains intact, which is characteristic of a Band 5.5 performance.
