Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position that smoking should be made illegal and providing reasons to support this view. The writer identifies the health consequences of smoking and suggests that government bodies should implement strict rules. However, the ideas lack full development and depth. For instance, the discussion on health issues remains somewhat general, mentioning cancer without exploring broader socio-economic or public health impacts in detail. Furthermore, the reasoning about banning production tends to over-generalise solutions. Although all parts of the prompt are addressed, the support for the main position is limited by superficial argumentation and lack of elaboration, placing this response firmly in the band 5 range.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into four paragraphs with a clear introduction and conclusion. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, as seen in the phrase 'if it will continuely going on to sell the drugs', where the pronoun lacks a precise antecedent. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is often faulty, causing the reader to pause. While an overall framework is present, the frequent lapses in cohesive flow and referencing errors prevent the text from achieving a higher band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with several noticeable errors in word choice and spelling that affect clarity. Examples include 'deterimental' misspelled as 'deterimental', 'consiquences' instead of 'consequences', 'towords' instead of 'towards', 'alchohal' instead of 'alcohol', 'cigaratte' instead of 'cigarette', 'weekness' instead of 'weakness', 'medicin' instead of 'medicine', 'prodution' instead of 'production', 'distory' instead of 'destroy', and 'increae' instead of 'increase'. The range of vocabulary is limited, and attempts to use less common items result in persistent spelling errors that cause some difficulty for the reader, characteristic of band 4.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures with frequent errors throughout. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex structures are often faulty and ungrammatical. Examples of grammatical errors include 'Most of the individual consider', 'I am fully agree with this statement', 'having smoking habit can destroy', 'there is no any actual medicin', 'Which could lead to help', and 'if it will continuely going on'. Punctuation is also problematic, notably with run-on sentences and comma splices in the introduction and body paragraphs. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and distort meaning in places.
