Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by taking a clear position that smoking should be made illegal and supporting it with reasons and examples, such as referencing the World Health Organization statistics on global deaths. The ideas are extended and supported, discussing health impacts and government accountability. However, there are instances of over-generalisation and slightly repetitive arguments regarding the sale of tobacco. The main position is maintained throughout the essay, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6 descriptor.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is divided into a clear introduction, body paragraphs discussing health impacts and government solutions, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Additionally', although some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct ideas, such as moving from the health consequences to government interventions. However, referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall progression between sentences could be smoother to achieve higher bands.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student attempts a range of vocabulary suitable for the topic, including terms like 'detrimental effects', 'rehabilitation centers', and 'accountability'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'ciggrettes', 'tobbaco', 'esophagal', 'accountibilty', and 'obstcle'. Phrases like 'smoking also involving to cause' and 'struckly punished' demonstrate limitations in word formation and collocation, placing this firmly in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in the essay, including subject-verb agreement issues ('smoking also involving to cause', 'tobacco selling is... a lot of people are earning', 'selling these products... also should be ban'), preposition errors ('agree to this statement', 'reason to this issue'), and structural awkwardness ('I am totally agree'). These errors require some effort from the reader to interpret, though communication is generally maintained.
