Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear and consistent position in agreement with the statement that smoking should be made illegal. The writer presents relevant main ideas, such as the health consequences of smoking, second-hand smoke, and environmental damage. However, these ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed due to insufficient supporting detail and examples. For instance, the argument regarding environmental harm mentions that it causes fires sometimes, but this point is not fully extended. Furthermore, there are generalizations made throughout the essay without sufficient elaboration to reach a higher band. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the Band 5 descriptor well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, showing a basic attempt at overall organization. However, the progression of ideas is often disjointed, and the logical flow between sentences is weak. Cohesive devices are used in a very basic and sometimes repetitive manner, such as starting multiple paragraphs with 'Smoking not only...' or 'In the end I want to say'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the paragraphing, while present, does not always manage relationships between ideas effectively. There is a lack of sophisticated transition phrases, leading to a mechanical feel in the overall structure. This performance aligns with a Band 5 for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is quite basic and repetitive, frequently employing simple words like 'bad', 'help', and 'cause'. There are numerous spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'couses' for causes, 'mejor' for major, 'dieases' for diseases, 'lance' for lungs, 'kidne' for kidneys, 'damege' for damage, 'phisicaly' for physically, 'effects' for affects, 'secound' for second, 'bed' for bad, 'humens' for humans, 'illigal' for illegal, 'gornment' for government, and 'step' for steps. These noticeable errors and limited lexical range cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a Band 4 level of lexical resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but these attempts are frequently marred by basic grammatical and punctuation errors. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('those who smoke, there lance and kidne get damege'), fragment sentences ('If can cause death'), and preposition errors ('dying every year with many diease'). Complex structures are often faulty, and errors are frequent enough to cause significant difficulty and distraction for the reader. Control over basic grammatical rules is inconsistent. Consequently, the writing fits the Band 4 descriptors for grammatical range and accuracy.
