Student answer (Band 6.0)
Despite knowing the fact that smoking is injurious to one's health, some people still indulge in this activity, leading to various health issues. Therefore, it is often argued that smoking should be declared as illegal. I firmly agree with this view.
Admittedly, it is the long-term health deterioration that results from cintinuous consumption of such substances. As it is known that smoking can cause various types of chronic diseases such as lung cancer, organ damage, it should be permanently banned. This will not only discourage individuals from intaking this substance but also protect other individuals from the detrimntal effects of passive smoking. A case in point is majority of developed countries where smoking has been made illegal, thereby having more healthy population.
Moreover, such type of habits also give rise to toher crimes. When people become addicted to tobacco or cigaratte, they cannot survive for even a single day wihout it. Hnece, they become frustrated and indulge in heinous crimes such as robbery, murder. What makes this argument particulary convincing is that various youngsters can also get influenced from these type of behavious due to their impressionable age, which can jeopardise thier health and future. America is the quintessential example in this regard as a significant proportion of youth has fallen prey to certain types of drug abuse onlcuding cigarettes. Therefore, strict ban is compulsory and would be highly benefifcial to serve a greater good.
In conclusion, I firlmy believe that smoking can cause issues not only for the active smokers but for those who come in contact with them due to multiple reasons. Only when it owuld be made illegal people will reduce its consumption, gradually avoiding it completely.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt directly, taking a clear stance that smoking should be made illegal. The writer covers all parts of the task by discussing the health consequences, the benefits of a ban, and the secondary effects of addiction. Ideas are extended with examples, such as mentioning developed countries and referencing the situation in America, although some arguments, such as the claim that smoking leads to heinous crimes like murder, are rather extreme and under-developed in terms of logical support. Nevertheless, a clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The task response aligns well with the requirements for a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organised into an introduction, body paragraphs supporting the main stance, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, cohesion at the sentence level is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, transitional phrases like 'A case in point is majority of developed countries' lack articles, and referencing is occasionally unclear. Furthermore, repetitive sentence openings and minor mechanical links restrict the flow. Overall, the arrangement is coherent, making it suitable for a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully using terms like 'injurious', 'deterioration', 'impressionable age', and 'quintessential'. However, there are numerous spelling and word-choice errors throughout the essay, such as 'cintinuous' instead of continuous, 'detrimntal', 'toher', 'cigaratte', 'wihout', 'Hnece', 'particulary', 'behavious', 'thier', 'onlcuding', 'benefifcial', 'firlmy', and 'owuld'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, their frequency prevents the lexical score from reaching Band 7.0. Therefore, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar with structures such as conditional and participial clauses (e.g., 'Despite knowing the fact that...'). However, frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing persist, including missing articles ('is majority of developed countries', 'serve a greater good' used appropriately, but 'as significant proportion'), subject-verb agreement issues ('people will reduce its consumption, gradually avoiding it completely'), and typos that affect structural accuracy. Although communication is rarely impeded, the frequency of errors places this firmly in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range, leaning toward a 6.0 as the meaning remains clear.
