Student answer (Band 6.0)

Smoking is one of the major cause of preventable diseases and premature deaths around the world. Although some people argue that adults should have freedom to choose whether to smoke. I largely agree that smoking should be banned and made illegal because it damages both smokers and people around them. In this essay, I will discuss reason behind it with relevant reasons and real-world examples.

Out of all the arguments, one of the prominent reason of restrict smoking because it can cause serious health problems. That is to say, people who smoke regularly have a higher risk of developing diseases such as lung cancer, heart disease and breathing difficulties. Moreover, smoking can become an addiction, which it difficult for many people to stop even when they are already understand its adverse effects. For instance, a person who starts smoking at a younger age may continue the habit for many years and later on suffer from seious chronic diseases. In addition, smokin can also affect family members and other people who are neraby. Therefore, governments should introduce strict measures, such as banning smoking in public places and increasing taxes on tabacco products.

Furthermore, banning smoking could create several practical and social problems. Besides that, if tabacco products were made illelegal, some amokers might pruchace them from illegal sellers, which could increase the black market and make these products more difficult to control.

On the other hand, individuals have the right to make personal choices, even when those choices may negative cosequences. For example, rather than simply punishing smokers, governments could provide free progarmmes that help people overcome nicotine addiction. If effective support is available, more people may encorage to quite smoking voluntarily, which would reduce the number of smoking related illnesses over time. For example, many local authorities run awareness campaigns to educate their citizens about smoking related health problems.

In conclusion, I strongly agree with the given statement that smoking should completely banned because it harmful to both individuals and society. A combiantion of higer taxes and health education programmes would be more practical to reduce smoking peoblems.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position agreeing that smoking should be made illegal. The writer provides relevant ideas, such as health risks and the impact on people nearby, supporting them with examples like lung cancer and chronic diseases. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or contain abrupt shifts, such as introducing arguments against the ban mid-essay in the third paragraph before returning to personal choices in the fourth. The position remains generally clear throughout, aligning with the Band 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing used to separate distinct ideas and arguments. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Although', 'Moreover', 'For instance', and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and logical progression are occasionally faulty, particularly in the third paragraph where the text abruptly discusses practical and social problems before pivoting back. Additionally, some transitional links feel mechanical. This matches the Band 6 descriptor where cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'premature deaths', 'adverse effects', and 'nicotine addiction'. However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'cause' instead of 'causes', 'tabacco' instead of 'tobacco', 'amokers' instead of 'smokers', 'pruchace' instead of 'purchase', 'illelegal' instead of 'illegal', 'cosequences' instead of 'consequences', 'progarmmes' instead of 'programmes', 'encorage' instead of 'encouraged', and 'peoblems' instead of 'problems'. These errors do not impede communication but restrict the score to Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses and relative clauses. There are, however, frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('one of the major cause'), sentence fragments or run-on structures ('Although some people argue that adults should have freedom to choose whether to smoke. I largely agree...'), and missing auxiliary verbs ('more people may encorage to quite smoking'). While the errors do not impede overall communication, they occur with sufficient frequency to place the grammar at a Band 5.5 level.
