Student answer (Band 5.0)

On my own perception about smoking can cause a serious illnesses and should made illegal, I agree the smoking will be illegal because it will help to the people who are in this bad doing or in this situation right now. Some people are not smooking they are the victims to enhale the smoke from the users. In situation right now, its started from the minors which very dangerous to the health of everyone. I would like to recommend to have an age limit to to sell the cigarittes to ensure that to avoid minors. And also people from the goverment they have to make a rules or a program in every city to limit or to give people knowledge how dangerous for there health to being a smokers. The government in every institution they have to emplement the designated area for smooking for the safety of other people who in not using it. On my side, if this rules to be emplemented of follow by the smokers it will help everyone to be healthy in every places.

For example, smoker people they can give illnesses to other people who are not users. It give also additional expenses for the people used to smoke. In this regards, it will create more problem to the society that to spread the illnesses from smoking. On my experience with smokers can't stop or avoid smoking its because thier body or tounge used to do it. In other words, smokers they make it like a habbit.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether smoking should be made illegal and presents a clear position of agreement. The writer includes relevant ideas such as passive smoking, the impact on minors, the addictive nature of nicotine, and the role of government regulations through designated areas and age limits. However, the development of these ideas is limited and somewhat repetitive, with arguments remaining at a surface level rather than being fully extended with deep elaboration or concrete personal examples. For instance, the mention of personal experience with smokers is very brief and underdeveloped. Nevertheless, all parts of the prompt are touched upon, earning a Band 5.5 for task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text is divided into two paragraphs, though the division is somewhat unbalanced, with the second paragraph functioning more as a brief continuation. Logical progression is occasionally disrupted by awkward transitions, such as 'In situation right now' and 'In this regards'. Cohesive devices are frequently inaccurate or used repetitively, leading to a mechanical flow. For example, referencing is sometimes unclear, as seen in sentences like 'it will help to the people who are in this bad doing'. While there is an overall attempt to structure the argument, the mechanical cohesion and weak paragraphing keep this criterion at a Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on everyday words and simple phrases like 'bad doing', 'smooking', and 'cigarittes'. There are noticeable spelling errors ('enhale', 'habbit', 'thier', 'emplement') and word-choice inaccuracies ('smoker people', 'additional expenses'). Less common lexical items are attempted but lack precision and collocation awareness. Although the intended message is generally conveyed despite the errors, the vocabulary range is limited and minimally adequate, corresponding to a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty and ungrammatical, such as in 'On my own perception about smoking can cause a serious illnesses and should made illegal'. Frequent errors in prepositions, verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries (e.g., run-on structures and missing subjects) cause significant difficulty for the reader and obscure meaning in places. Because errors are dense and control over complex grammar is weak, this aspect of the writing aligns with a Band 4.5.
