Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on whether smoking should be made illegal. The writer strongly agrees with the statement, arguing that tobacco consumption leads to serious illnesses and that a complete ban would protect public health. Ideas are introduced and supported with general examples, such as the link between smoking and lung cancer, as well as the potential outcome of banning the product on consumer behavior. However, the development of ideas tends to be repetitive and somewhat generalized. For instance, the discussion on how authorities can help smokers find alternatives lacks specific elaboration. While the prompt is adequately addressed, the arguments would benefit from greater depth and more precise real-world examples to reach a higher band level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a logical progression of ideas moving from the health effects of smoking in the first body paragraph to the benefits of a market ban in the second. However, cohesion is often faulty and mechanical, with frequent misuse of cohesive devices such as "on the other side" instead of "on the other hand". Referencing is occasionally unclear, and punctuation errors around paragraph connectors disrupt the smooth flow of the text. Paragraphing is present, but internal transitions between sentences can feel abrupt, making the overall structure less fluid than required for higher bands.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as "consumption," "addiction," "breathing difficulties," and "public health." However, there are numerous spelling errors throughout the response, including "somoking" for smoking, "cigrates" for cigarettes, "tabo" for tobacco, "orgniaze" for organize, "avialablity" for availability, and "ingreous" for injurious. Furthermore, word choice and collocations are occasionally awkward or inaccurate, such as "dangerously effective" instead of "dangerously affect" and "preious life" instead of "precious lives." These lexical errors and frequent misspellings occasionally strain the reader, though communication remains mostly intact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures like "if the product is not available in the market, people stopped to use..." and relative clauses. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and tense consistency. Examples include "consumption of cigarettes are dangerously effective" (instead of 'is dangerously affecting'), "person who's consumed" (instead of 'who consume'), and "smoke produced form cigarette are directly attacked" (instead of 'is directly attacking'). Punctuation and capitalization are also problematic, with multiple missing capital letters at the beginning of sentences and improper spacing around commas. These persistent errors frequently cause difficulty for the reader.
