Student answer (Band 5.0)

It has been observed that smoking is always a serious issue to the society. Although some people believe that it will be illegal as well. I agree the given statement to the large extent. My inclination is elaborated in ensuing paragraph and relevant examples.

The foremost argument to justify my stand is that smoking will affects your health first and continues to your financial as well. A person starts smoking with their peers and after it will be an addiction, which affects health, family and finances. For instance, a boy started smoking in his college and continues this habit to his entire life, beacuse of this he suddenly suffered with lungs cancer specifically, affects kidneys. Beside this, it is also true that center government should have to take some serious actions on the smoking.

Furthermore, the other reason to prove my point is that bollywood and hollywood movies plays a great role in an individual. For example, everyone wants to spend some time for entertainment from this busy schedule, where he watch a movie which fully promotes smoking and drinking in particularly each and every scene, obviously this provoke an ordinary person towards this.

To the nutshell, famous people can influence young people and therefore have an opportunity to set positive examples. However, they needs to foster social cohesion that smoking is injurious to health and motivates youth to avoid this and with the help of social media promotes this, so, that governement should take some serious steps towards it and make it illegal along with that bring a strict law and fine for the same

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear stance that smoking should be made illegal to a large extent. The writer attempts to provide reasons, such as health and financial consequences, as well as the influence of media like Bollywood and Hollywood movies. However, the ideas are somewhat under-developed and lack extension. For instance, the example of the boy who started smoking in college jumps abruptly from lung cancer to affecting kidneys without clear elaboration. Furthermore, the final paragraph mixes ideas about celebrities, social media, and government laws somewhat confusingly. While a position is presented and supported, the support remains basic and occasionally tangential, aligning closely with Band 5 descriptors where ideas are limited and partially developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding section, showing an attempt at structural organisation. However, the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing referencing. For example, cohesive phrases like 'To the nutshell' instead of 'In a nutshell' and the repetitive use of 'this' without clear antecedents make the flow mechanical and occasionally hard to follow. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs suffers from abrupt shifts in topic, particularly in the conclusion where multiple new ideas are introduced simultaneously. Overall, these cohesion issues place the response firmly in the Band 5 category, reflecting inadequate and sometimes inaccurate use of cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple terms like 'serious issue', 'bad habit', and 'health'. There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'continue this habit to his entire life' instead of 'continue this habit for his entire role or life', 'center government' instead of 'central government', and 'suffer with lungs cancer' instead of 'suffer from lung cancer'. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'social cohesion' and 'inclination', the numerous errors in collocation and lexical form restrict the range. Communication is occasionally strained due to these lexical inaccuracies, making a Band 5 score appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty and ungrammatical. Examples of grammatical errors include 'smoking will affects your health' (modal verb error), 'beacuse of this he suddenly suffered with lungs cancer specifically, affects kidneys' (fragmented and incorrect verb forms), and 'they needs to foster' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation is also problematic, with run-on sentences joined improperly by commas, such as in the final paragraph ('promotes this, so, that governement should take...'). Because frequent errors in basic and complex structures cause noticeable difficulty for the reader, the writing corresponds to the Band 5 descriptors.
